I had no idea abiut that guy until Staley was fired. I liked his moxy/style/leadershjp approach. Glad we hired him.

Don't know anything about Giff either but seems good and if AD likes it, i like it. (Does anyone know if AD likes it?)

He's been a DL coach for

Buffalo (2010-2012): Chan Gailey HC, George Edwards DC; Wannstadt DC in 2012.
Tennessee (2014-2015): Ken Whisenhunt HC, Ray Horton DC
SD/LAC (2016-2023): Mike McCoy HC 2016; Anthony Lynn 2017-2020; Staley 2021-2023
John Pagnano DC (2016), Gus Bradley DC (2017-2020); Renaldo Hill (2021-2022) and Derrick Ansley (2023)

So in 13 years he's been DL coach for 5 head coaches and 7 DCs.

Nothing remarkable.

Best sack years (2023; 48....2017; 43....2022; 40)
Best vs the run (2016; 3.8....2015; 3.9....2023; 4.1)

7 years the defense was a 3-4. Six years a 4-3. Looking down the list of DTs and DEs he's coached, no superstars. I wonder how he'll be with AD and The Conductor?

Statistically underwhelming. I hope that changes with our guys. He has AD and the conductor like you said. - huge advantage. Adding all pro level edge player(s) will certainly help. As will developing the current roster edge guys. Wait and see is about all we can do.

I guess another question would be: What is Giff and Khalil Mack's relationship like?

I wonder.

The Chargers are 45 mil over the cap. Accordimg to OTC, the dead money/cap savings hit (17 mil/23 mil) for Mack doesn't change for release or trade. I'm sure if they were going to go that way they'd prefer to get a draft pick out of it. Mike Williams is probably gone...a 20 mil cap savings....because he can't stay on the field. Should bear watching....'hey Kahlil, how'd you like to significantly reduce the amount of double teams against you?'

The edge marker is gonna be interesting. Allen probably gets tagged so he will cost the most via trade. Burns probably doesn’t get tagged but the comp for him will drive his price up, there are some second tier guys like Uche (Pats) that will be cheaper options. But a trade for Mack, poss for a 2nd - 4th + a late round pick, would be interesting.

Apparently not a done deal (from Jourdan):

NFL Network reported over the last weekend that former Chargers assistant Giff Smith would be hired to fill the defensive line coach vacancy, but in response to asking for confirmation of that report, Shula said, “We’re still working through that.”

Smith could still eventually be the hire, but a source with knowledge of the hiring process said Tuesday that position has not yet officially been filled.
