Stetson Bennett missed Week 1 with a shoulder injury but the Rams opted not to place him on injured reserve along with Cooper Kupp and Hunter Long. Instead, they’re placing him on the non-football injury list, Sean McVay said Wednesday.

McVay was adamant about not sharing any details on Bennett’s condition or status, repeatedly saying that he didn’t want to disclose anything and keep it all in-house.

“Not going to really have any follow-up information or anything that I’ll give in that regard,” he said.

McVay did specify that this is unrelated to Bennett’s shoulder injury.

“No, and that’s all I’m going to say and I really hope that you can please respect my wishes in regards to keeping that in-house,” McVay said. “I understand you have a job to do, but there’s certain things that I think are a little bit bigger and more important and out of respect for the particulars and specifics, want to be able to keep it in-house and that’s where I’d like to leave it, please.”

While on the NFI list, Bennett will be forced to miss a minimum of four games. It’s unclear when he will return or what his status will be moving forward, but if he is injured, he must not have gotten hurt at the Rams’ facility or while practicing.

With Bennett sidelined, the Rams have Brett Rypien on the practice squad so he could get signed to the active roster as Matthew Stafford’s backup now that there’s an open spot on the 53-man roster.

“I think there’s certain things that are a lot bigger than that,” McVay said of how Bennett’s absence after being drafted in the fourth round impacts the Rams. “The fortunate thing for us is that Brett Rypien has been in-house, he’s on our practice squad, he was the backup last week and he’ll continue to be in that situation until anything changes on that note.”

I don’t think that the NFL allows teams to put players that are unhappy on the non-football injury list.

I'm not in a position to know but he does seem like he could be a bit of a head case but like AZ says, i don't think that's something that you can put a player on NFI for...

It could be something medical that is serious. Or could it be he doesn’t want to play in the NFL and they are trying to figure that out using the NFI designation?? Is that even possible? Mental illness type of sitch??

Maybe a mid-life crisis? J/k of course.

It's weird and I hope whatever it is gets resolved.

Don't know that this is definitive but:

"Players who are injured outside of football — perhaps working out on their own in the offseason or doing a recreational activity — or have a long-term illness not associated with playing, are placed on this list."
