Coach Jeff Fisher filled two spots on his coaching staff with one hire Monday, adding Mike Groh as wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator.

Groh, 44, replaces Ray Sherman as wide receivers coach with the Rams and in his added duties as passing game coordinator will aid offensive coordinator Rob Boras. Monday's move obviously means that Boras will be back as offensive coordinator after handling those duties for the final four games of the 2015 season following the dismissal of Frank Cignetti.

Fisher had leaned that way all along _ towards retaining Boras _ but since Boras' background was so heavily in the running game area, Fisher wanted to add someone to his staff who could provide a boost knowledge-wise in the passing game.

Groh is a former quarterback at the University of Virginia and is the son of Al Groh, former head coach of the New York Jets and at Virginia.

Mike Groh spent the past three seasons as wide receivers coach with the Chicago Bears, where he worked with a couple of bright offensive minds in Bears head coach Marc Trestman in 2013-14 and last season with offensive coordinator Adam Gase, now the head coach for the Miami Dolphins.

Groh has also worked at the college level at Virginia, Alabama, and Louisville.
Fisher also interviewed former Cleveland offensive coordinator John DeFilippo, and Tennessee Titans quarterbacks coach Jason Michael for the position. The Rams requested permission to interview Philadelphia offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur for the job, but that interview apparently never took place as Shurmur took a post with the Minnesota Vikings instead.

Fisher is still looking to add a tight ends coach and running backs coach to his staff.

Hard not to be underwhelmed by this move.

Let's home some of Gase rubbed off on him.

Coach Groh, you have no QB, one diminutive but explosive WR, TE's who scare no one and one of them can't catch, and a very young offensive line. You do have an all-world running back who should be of help catching out of the back field.

I actually like this hire, now it's not Whisenhunt or a high profile offensive coordinator, but Groh did an excellent job in Chicago and did learn under Trestman and Gase who had good results on the offensive side of the ball and considering how things have played out, it's the best we could hope for.

Based on having the worst passing game in the NFL, this should be construed as a step, albeit probably a small one, in the right direction.

No coach can guarantee WR/TE catch the damn ball. Give this man some better personnel and maybe he makes a difference.

Jeffery missed half of the 2015 season sidelined with several injuries, but that did not stop him from leading the Bears in receiving yards by a large margin. Should Chicago let the 25-year-old hit the open market, he will easily be the most sought after skill player in free agency, with the potential to totally transform a passing offense. Jeffery finished the year as PFF’s third-highest graded wide receiver, behind only Antonio Brown and Julio Jones.

He is the only WR listed in their top-20 F/As, so his price will be steep. But, injuries notwithstanding, he is a proven, top-flight, #1 WR.
