Aaron Donald could consider retirement if Rams win Super Bowl
Posted by Charean Williams on February 13, 2022, 5:31 PM EST

Defensive tackle Aaron Donald could retire if the Rams win Super Bowl LVI.

Rodney Harrison of NBC reported on the pregame show that Donald told him that he will consider retirement it if he gets his first ring.

“He’s big on legacy,” Harrison said. “He doesn’t want to be known as a defender that accomplished so many individual things and never won a Super Bowl. But he also told me this: If he wins a Super Bowl, there’s a strong possibility he could walk away from the game and retire.”

Donald, 30, already is considered one of the greatest defenders in NFL history with a Hall of Fame resume. He is a three-time defensive player of the year, tying for the most ever, and he finished third in voting for the award this year.

He has eight Pro Bowls, seven All-Pros, all-decade honors for the 2010s and 98 career sacks.

After getting home, I started the DVR and in the pregame Michele Tafoya mentioned that. WTF?

There’s rumblings of McVay hanging it up also to raise a family. But I don’t think that means next year necessarily. It seems to be the fate of a Rams fan and the price we pay to win a Super Bowl. Thinking back to Vermeil.

If both McVay and AD do decide to leave, it will be awhile before we get back to the playoffs. AD is the Heart and Soul of the Defense, and McVay is the Offensive genius. In fact, it may take 20 years to get back into the Super Bowl, should both leave.

I hadn't heard any rumblings about this and it would be a disaster for our team to lose those guys. We got something good and sustainable here.

McVay has already said he's staying.

As for Donald, who knows? I will say this... the Rams and Bengals became the first teams ever to play 21 games in one season (not counting preseason). They have to be mentally and physically exhausted. Hopefully, after a week or two of rest, Donald will realize that he's not ready to hang it up.

I just don't see AD hanging them up yet. He will at least play out his contract. By early March, we will probably see AD back at Pitt putting in work.
