STAFFORD THROWS A LOT OF PICK-SIXES

pretty much have to file this one under nfl oddities...

stafford throws a lot of pick-sixes, he has thrown as many pick-sixes in the last 3 games as goff threw in 4 years under mcvay, in fact stafford currently leads the league in pick-sixes with 3.

since 2009, stafford's first year in the league, no qb had thrown more pick-sixes than staff, he's at a whopping 26... sure, stafford has also thrown a lot of passes since 2009, only 4 guy have thrown more, but his pick-six per pass attempt rate is telling.

for example, since 2009, pass attempts per pick-six:

stafford - 255

rodgers - 2,122
mahomes - 1,079
wentz - 1,068
j.allen - 882
wilson - 754
brady - 673
luck - 627
roethlisberger - 574
goff - 556
prescott - 534
mayfield - 455
keenum - 430
brees - 406

a few studs have thrown a lot of pick-sixes per pass attempt including:

warner - 257
p.manning - 285
favre - 296

but the only 13 guys who have a worst pick-six rate than stafford since 2009 aren't exactly the stuff of nfl legends:

j.rosen, g.smith, n.mullen, c.ponder, d.anderson, j.skelton, b.bortles, m.schuab, .b.gabbert, m.moore, j.winston, m.hasselbeck and t.siemian.

That's an interesting stat find. Perhaps he needs to do a little more Evelyn Woods speed reading or something. His arm talent is off the charts and his toughness is solid. He appears to be such a gamer he doesn't want to take a play off, , even when it's not there.
I'm still super stoked he's under center, just with a more pronounced eyebrow raised..

Yeah but look on the bright side. He's never thrown a pick 6 in the postseason!!!! 8-) Maybe getting them out of his system now is good? ;)

I guess nobody cares that of the three games in a row, one of them was an absolutely perfect pass that Higbee virtually handed to the 49ers.

Yeah, that was more of a handoff than a pick 6. But still. 2 turnovers a game the last 3 games by MS. Made worse by the PR fumble yesterday. We can only wonder what might have happened with 4:47 left in the third, down by 10, if Koski doesn't fumble. Score on that drive and maybe Stafford doesn't force the pick 6 pass on the next series. A 3 point game going into the 4th would have been a lot better. If ifs and buts were candy and nuts......

I’m not sure Stafford was much of an upgrade once the draft picks are factored in

If you're going to do the math, it is also worthwhile to "factor in" the picks given up to acquire Goff + the picks given up to acquire Stafford.

Yikes, no kidding. We should have received Tom Brady in his prime!

I never believed the hype about Stafford being the perfect fit for Rams. But as a Rams fan, I would have been happy to be wrong. Stafford is a good QB. IMO NFL coaches have McVay's number and the former boy genius doesn't have a plan B.

McVay's complaint about Goff was that his (McVay's) play-calling had to be exactly perfect in order to win. There was no room for error with Goff. And the story was that with Stafford, he would have more freedom in calling plays without having to be perfect every single play.

I guess it wasn't Goff's fault after all. Or if it was, the same is now true of Stafford.

Unless it was McVay's game planning, and inability to come up with new schemes or adjustments. Who'd a thunk?
