for the 2011-2018 stretch:stafford and the lions ranked 28th in deep pass rate (% of passes thrown 15 yards or more yards in the air) - only 4 teams threw deep less often than stafford and the lions.
for the 2016-2018 stretch:stafford ranked 32nd, 24th and 34th in average depth of pass.
but he's lamonica according to this "lions writer", he's the mad bomber revived, a guy who opts for the deep ball 99 out of 100 times?
how about the 2017-2018 stretch?goff and the rams ranked 9th in deep pass rate, only 8 teams threw deep more often.
stafford and the lions ranked 29th, only 3 teams threw deep less often.
----------------------
but something happened in 2019 that changed both stafford's and goff's deep pass rate (and, seemingly, their deep pass reputations) - the lions brought in bevell from the seahawks who had overseen one of the top deep pass offenses in the league with wilson under center, while the rams tore a page out of shanny's playbook and shifted to 2-te sets and threw underneath in an effort to improve pass pro.
these changes catapulted stafford and the lions to 3rd in deep pass rate for the 2019-2020 stretch while upping stafford's depth of pass rankings to 1st and 8th respectively - conversely the changes dropped the rams to 27th in deep pass rate for the 2019-2020 stretch while goff dropped to pre-2019 stafford-like rankings in average depth of pass, i.e. near bottom league.

anyhoo, all of this is going to be so fun to watch, including seeing what mcvay does with his new toy (less 2-te sets, less underneath passes, more shotgun, less play-action, more 1st down passing, etc., etc., etc.?).
stafford is a seasoned qb vet, a guy with a shitload of experience under his belt, and something that mcvay has never worked with before, so that's going to be fun to watch as well, that dynamic.
as for goff? it will be interesting to see if lynn will gameplan to have goff throw downfield, throw deep, as goff did in 2017-2018 - if lynn's 4 years with the bolts is any indication the answer is probably yes, lynn's 2017-2020 bolts ranked 8th in deep pass rate, only 7 teams threw deep more often.
