If a player helps my team win, then I'm a fan. Orientation is irrelevant to me.

That's not the world we live in though. As you know the world you want is many years away. But right now in many circles, including male sports, being openly gay is stigmatized. Being public helps reduce that. A player coming out like this is deliberately trying to change perceptions, so that the stigma diminishes. As a very clear indication of that, when he made his announcement, Nassib also said he was donating to The Trevor Project, which is the leading national organization working on suicide prevention for lesbian and gay kids. Guess why the suicide rate is so high in that population (it's pretty obvious). It's not because we have reached an era when everyone simply accepts sexual orientation as a merely personal thing we don't even have to discuss.

Hassib's announcement was meant to draw attention to issues like that.
