We've lost 3 straight to them. Goff hasn't had a game with a QB rating over 86 in any of them. We've run 65 times at a 4.5 clip against them with 3 TDs. Going backwards, we've put up 16 (should have been 17 if not for Sloman), 31 and 7 points. Goff has 4 TD and 2 picks, although one was a very costly pick 6 right before the half in a 21-17 game. And in two of the three games they didn't sack him once, 4 times in the other game.

Did the niners get that much better on D from 2018 to 2019?

The first 3 times Goff played them the Rams offense put up 41, 37 and 41. Goff completed 55 of 78 (70.5%) for 693 yards (8.88 yds/att) with 9 TD and 0 picks. He was sacked once. We ran 110 times for 427 yards (3.9) and scored 5 rushing TDs.

Or is it possible Shanahan knows McVay's system so well, he's been able to help Saleh a bit AND the defense has improved talent-wise? It's like night and day. Before beating us earlier this year they got beat by the Cardinals (24 pts), Philly (25 pts) and Miami (43 pts). Something ain't right!!!

It's going to be interesting to see how McVay attacks them. Will it look like they're expecting it? Or will they look surprised? Will it be poorly executed or will it be executed well by the offense? I know we haven't exactly lit anybody up in a year and half, so it's probably some lack of execution and some bad play calling.

But I don't think Goff suddenly sucks.
Nor do I think McVay can't figure out why we've dropped 3 straight.

in saleh's first two years as the niners dc they ranked 30th (2017) and 27th (2018) in offensive points allowed, in 2019 they jumped to 5th best and are now ranked 11th headed into week 11 despite a bunch of injuries....

when the niners defense sucked under saleh (2017-208) mcvay's offense lit them up, the rams offense averaged close to 40 points a game against them (39.7), when their defense got good (2019-2020), mcvay's offense averaged 12 offensive points per game against them in 2 of the 3 they played, in the other game the rams put up 31 offensive points but the niners managed to put up 34.

in short, like all teams, mcvay's guys have struggled against top defenses, altho putting up just 16 on them a month ago was discouraging as hell given their injuries, and especially so given the niners coughed up 43 the week before to fitzpatrick and the dolphins and 37 two weeks later to the seahawks.

a loss to these mooks, a loss to these mooks led by the 1-3 mullens, would be awfully tough to swallow... with mullens under center, in mullens' 4 starts, here are the offensive points the niners have scored and allowed:

giants - offense: 36, defense: 9
eagles - offense: 20, defense: 18
packers - offense 17, defense: 34
saints - offense 13, defense 27

Like I wrote a month ago....we missed a golden opportunity with the Niners SO terribly injured & banged up personnel-wise in Santa Clara!!

I still say that Sam PugsleyAddams Sloman contributed to us losing the Niner game!
Goff's Second Half 4th down interception in the SF End Zone did NOT have to happen if Sloman makes that fucking Xtra Point earlier in the game. We wudda been down 11 instead of 12 at the time of Goff's Pick.....so we cudda kicked the short Figgie....and been down by 8...
....which is a 2-point converted TD sportsfans!!!

But being down 12, McVay reasoned that we needed TWO TDs....so he went with the high risk EndZone pass and got our lunch stolen by a Walking Wounded 49er Squad!!!

All the past stats are fine for reference. I simply don’t give a rats ass now. Throw them out. I can’t stand Saleh. I HATE the whiners. Always have, always will. Whatever it takes to get the W. I want and actually expect/predict that we smoke them. We have key injuries. So do they. So fucking what. MCV needs to pay off on his prediction that the O is “just this close” to exploding.

Do the Rams have a problem with SF? I mean yeah they lost 3 in a row, but I see each of the 3 games as a different thing.

First game in 2019, Rams with a shaky problem OL go up against the league's 2nd ranked defense and can't match up.

Second game in 2019, Goff and McVay play well enough to win against the SF D, though Wade and the defense don't (2 3rd and 16s completed after the Rams offense tied the game with time to spare). That's partly because all the injury replacements on the OL had settled down to be decently effective.

1st game in 2020. This is the one where I see a real issue. Shanahan teams always come prepared to compete hard and McVay teams sometimes seem to ease into street fights and in those cases do not show the kind of urgency they ought to. That's how that game looked to me. In fact, in his recent presser, O'Connell seemed to back that view (without saying it directly):

“It’s no secret they’ve had some injuries and just like a lot of teams in this league, but the one thing you continue to see when you turn on the tape is a really well coached team. They play really, really hard. You have got to match that energy and urgency and then match the execution level. Because you know they’re going to be so well coached. It’s always going to be a challenge when you play these guys….we know that and Sunday is going to be no different.”

Yeah, I feel a little better. My worry was Goff and/or McVay. But if you take that late first half pick out of the equation in week 16, he could have easily had a QB rating in the mid 90's and the Rams could have had a win.

Last game he started 1 of 6 and we were down 2 scores before you could say Bob's your uncle. I'd like to see a steady diet of Henderson + Akers and I'd bet there's a long run in there somewhere. Get that D to take a little step back and the passing game might thrive.

Two things I'm waiting patiently to happen. Henderson to snap off one of those "Memphis runs" and (as I said in another thread) a defensive score. That intensity matching? I really don't think that'll be a problem tomorrow. At least it shouldn't be. SF beat them already, a win tomorrow sets the Rams in a very good position and puts pressure on the other contenders, more so if one of them lose in the 1 o'clock slot.

Since O'Connell at least seems to be well aware of the intensity thing, enough to remark on it, you have to figure if it IS a problem tomorrow...that's a problem.

In the 2nd SF game of 2019, they were in the game because in the 2nd half, even though SF caught on to the roll-outs and took them away, the Rams came from behind twice against that D (which was at full strength) to first take the lead (28 to 24 at the end of the 3rd) and then to tie.

The intensity thing was an issue 1st game this year. SF had them 21-6 by the end of the 2nd and that wasn't just on Goff...obviously the defense was an issue too. SF had a TD on the opening drive, plus there were the 2 other drives for scores in the first half, including both the one with the 44 yarder to Kibble ( ) and a 13 play drive to put them up 21-6.

And yes SF 2020 was also partly Goff having a bad 2nd quarter of the season. But I see the 2019 games as 2 completely separate things.

I concur. There seems to be a Shanny is McV's daddy vibe out there. W/L records don't add up that way but head to head, sometimes I think they're in our heads.
