London, Denver may be contingencies for Kroenke if LA falls through

November 29, 2015 8:52 am ET

Rams owner Stan Kroenke is fixated on moving his franchise to Los Angeles for 2016, and the prospect of remaining in St. Louis for any extended period of time does not appeal to him. Should he lose out to the Chargers and Raiders on the rights to the LA market, the league knows it would have to work actively to find other solutions for Kroenke, which could include possibly London or Denver, according to league sources.

Kroenke already has business interests in England, and he owns the powerful London-based soccer club Arsenal, which has lavish training grounds and world-class facilities. Colorado serves as Kroenke's base, and his family already has extensive sports interests there as well, owning the Nuggets and Avalanche. The future ownership makeup of the Broncos is very much in doubt when long-term patriarch Pat Bowlen passes on.

For his part, Kroenke has not considered options outside of Los Angeles, and sources close to him say that while they have heard chatter regarding other potential fall-back plans from the league's perspective, it's not something the owner has actively mulled or taken part in.

Frankly, no market could offer the location, amenities and entertainment options of LA, and Kroenke already spends time there at his Malibu home. However, he is at the mercy of a voting process regarding relocation, and the decisions made on which teams get to LA is largely out of his hands. Should he not be allowed to move, the NFL is going to have to deal with the long-term future of the Rams franchise. Numerous well-connected ownership sources have continued to point to a potential move to London or the possibility of Kroenke perhaps purchasing the Broncos down the road and selling the Rams to an investor looking to keep the team in St. Louis as possible endgames to what has been a complicated and arduous process.

I feel like this is the money quote:

There was a reporter in Denver who squashed the Kroenke/Broncos thing yesterday and said there's a plan to keep Broncos in Bowlen family. Sorry, Bernie.

This is LaCanfora's way of sliding out of his pro-Carson position.

First he throws out this Denver and London smokescreen stuff and he puts it in the headline. Next we will hear how Kroenke really didn't want Denver or London and ends up in LA and no mention of how Carson had all the votes LaCanfora was touting weeks ago.

We all know the pot of gold is LA. That's what Kroenke and Spanos each want.

If the Broncos were a fall back option then why did he solve his cross ownership issue? lol

Stan buying the Raiders
Mark/Raiders moving to STL
Inglewood will house Chargers/Raiders
Rams to London
Stan sells the Rams to local STL folk
Rams to Toronto
Stan sells then gets rewarded an expansion team
Etc

We've heard it all this year.

No Stan is going to give the Rams to me. Then all of us get the best seats in the house for free.

This is salvo #2 but the firm of Carson, Spanos and Fabiani.

You are all over the place. First you're quoting Jason, then you're slamming him.

Carson is a smokescreen, always has been. Carson was created as a mis-direction, a counter.

Let's muddy the waters so this thing gets delayed and plays out long enough for me to figure something out.

Carson is not viable, and Iger's involvement means nothing toward making it viable.

His agreement is a contingency agreement. Lol

Yeah, I read that Iger's biggest asset to the team is his clout in LA and that many businesses "owe him one". So the Charaiders will get to benefit from the Disney work he has done.

I guess I just don't understand what he's supposed to bring. First, he won't even be a part of anything if the NFL doesn't approve the Carson site. Second, "he" hasn't ever done much. Sure, with Disney he's done some things but on his own, not really. Third, he wasn't exactly a whirlwind when he was with ABC and didn't bat 1.000 with Disney. Finally, what does he know about the NFL? I don't see much, if anything sports related in his background.

Iger may have connections but Kroenke "is" a connection. It's one thing if you know someone and can get into a party. It's entirely different to own the mansion and be throwing the party.
