Rams will play in London in 2016

Jim Thomas

Whether it's the St. Louis Rams or the Los Angeles Rams in 2016 remains to be seen. But the Rams will play a regular-season game in London in 2016 as part of the NFL's UK International Series.

The Rams will play an NFC East opponent that finishes in the same spot in their division as the Rams finish in the NFC West. In other words, if the Rams finish third in the NFC West this season, they will face the third-place team in the NFC East, etc.

The game is scheduled for Oct. 23 and once again it's a Rams home game. The Rams also lost a home game to London in 2012 when they played the New England Patriots in Wembley Stadium, losing 45-7.

Other International Series games next season in London are Indianapolis vs. Jacksonville on Oct. 2 and Washington vs. Cincinnati on Oct. 30. So yes, it's possible Washington will play games in London in back-to-back weeks if they end up finishing in the same spot in their division as the Rams do in the NFC East.

The St. Louis NFL stadium task force issued the following statement following the league announcement:

"The Rams playing a home game in London next season is irrelevant if the team leaves St. Louis. However we are confident the Rams will continue to call St. Louis their home. Our work remains focused on the Rams playing for 30 years in a new riverfront stadium in downtown St. Louis and not whether they play one home game a year from now in London.

"If the Rams proceed with us on the north riverfront stadium and redevelopment project, we're certain accommodations can be made for the Rams to play one game in London next season."

Rams game in London would violate Dome lease

Nov 25, 2015, 9:27am CST Updated Nov 25, 2015, 10:28am CST

Jacob Kirn

Even if the Rams remain in St. Louis next year, the team plans to play one of its home games in London.

The National Football League said Wednesday the St. Louis Rams will host an NFC East team in week seven on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016. The game will be played at Twickenham Stadium.

But the Rams, who are eyeing a move to the Los Angeles market, are currently on a year-to-year lease at the Edward Jones Dome. The St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission (CVC), the body that operates the Dome, released the following statement Wednesday:

“We recently became aware that the NFL has selected the Rams to play in London during the 2016 football season, and have designated them the ‘home’ team. The Rams are on a year-to year lease and have until Jan. 28, 2016 to inform us if they will play the 2016 season at the Edward Jones Dome. We have had no formal discussions with the Rams about their 2016 intentions or a London game in 2016, but if they do play in the Dome in 2016, the terms of the lease remain in effect and provides that all Rams NFL home games (other than preseason) will be played at the Facilities.”

A Rams spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In addition to the Rams, the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders are looking to move to the Los Angeles area. Rams owner Stan Kroenke plans to build a $2 billion stadium in Inglewood, California. The Chargers and Raiders are planning a joint stadium in Carson, California.
NFL owners are expected to vote by early next year whether to allow any of the teams to move to the market.

The St. Louis stadium authority has spent about $12 million on a $1 billion Mississippi riverfront stadium project, meant to keep the Rams here. It still requires approval from the St. Louis Board of Aldermen.

The St. Louis stadium task force, led by Dave Peacock, said in a statement Wednesday that if the Rams enter talks with the task force on the riverfront stadium plan, "we're certain accommodations can be made for the Rams to play one game in London next season."

The NFL has scheduled other games for London in 2016.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will host the Indianapolis Colts on Oct. 2 at Wembley Stadium. And the Cincinnati Bengals will host the Washington Redskins on Oct. 30 at Wembley Stadium.

“The passion our UK fans have shown for the NFL is overwhelming,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “We are very appreciative of the strong and growing fan support, not only for the games, but for all of the related NFL events we host in the UK throughout the year. We look forward to welcoming new fans to their first NFL game in 2016 and welcoming back thousands of others that are helping our sport grow to new levels of popularity in London and beyond.”

If the Rams players hate to play in the Ed, wait til they get a load of the Coliseum locker room. One less game there will be welcome.

The PSL agreement also says all Ram home games have to be played at the ED.

Leave it to the compost stalkers to assume this means the Rams are staying next year. You gotta love dumb logic. I agree on LA front, the Coliseum isn't exactly nice, and exposure internationally never hurts.

ESK giving the big middle finger with this one.

So the CVC doesn't have to live up to the lease but the Rams do? Good luck enforcing that St. Louis.

Looks like Stan is asserting his will and also possibly garnering some good will from the NFL.

I agree, but technically the CVC didn't live up to lease regarding top tier, that's why the Rams can go year to year. However, the terms of the lease even on a yearly basis have to be abided by both parties. This would be in violation of a yearly lease with the CVC in 2016 as constructed. How the idiots in St. Louis view this as a positive bit of news is beyond me.

It's not like Stan did this on his own.

The NFL decides who plays in London and they know it would be a violation of the CVC lease...

Dome operator: Rams must play in St. Louis, not London

By The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS — The NFL has scheduled a Rams home game in London next season, but the operator of the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis says the team’s lease agreement prohibits it.

The NFL on Wednesday announced three games in London. The Rams would play a not-yet-decided NFC East team Oct. 23 at Twickenham Stadium.

There is uncertainty whether the Rams will even belong to St. Louis by then. Owners of the Rams, San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders are all exploring moves to Los Angeles, perhaps as early as next season.

In a statement, the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission says terms of the team’s lease agreement require all home games, other than preseason, to be at the dome.

A message seeking comment from the Rams wasn’t immediately returned.
