If this is indeed the case, I feel a whole heck of lot better about this trade. This means that we have a better chance to keep some of our FA's! :!2:

Upgrade at QB, less cap space taken by the QB position, probably keep at least one more FA of ours. I can live with this. :idea2:

not only did people in this thread miss it, including me, but so did just about every talking head, hell even spotrac got it wrong, they posted this just a couple of hours ago...

but their (spotrac's) website is now showing goff's $22.2m in dead money on the lions books, along with satfford's dead money, and no dead money for goff on the rams books, incredible...

so that means the rams were $28m over the cap before the trade, and now are $13m over, i.e. the rams lowered their cap number by $14m+ and got goff completely off the books, pretty damn impressive

If Donald gets hurt again, we'll be in trouble again. But, with Stafford we'll likely get more than 174 yards and 1 TD from the QB, so we may still have a puncher's chance even if the defense can't carry the day.

Darn, I forgot to mention that in my post. Getting Stafford is addition by subtraction. I'd have been none too keen about the 49ers getting him. They already have our number with shaky QB play.

Granted, if they get Watson it will be problematic but who knows? We seem to shut down athletic QB's pretty regularly.

I didn't think that way at all.

Brutal for him. That team sucks.

Their uniforms are better.

aeneas1 wrote:so how about holmes's first big move as gm for the lions?

reduced the lions 2021 cap number by $5 million by swapping stafford for goff, on top of which he got 2 first round picks and a 3rd round pick, and has goff in 2022 for just $25.5m, a killer deal if goff does well in 2021...

gonna have to revise this post now that it seems clear that part of the trade deal was the lions agreeing to clear goff completely from the rams books, i.e. as part of the deal the lions took on goff's $22.2 in dead money.... so as hard as it is to believe, the lions will in effect spend $69m in cap space for goff's services in 2021, or 39% of their total cap: $22.2m in dead money for goff + $19.0m in dead money for stafford + a $27.8m cap hit for goff.

:shock2:

Clearly I am biased some toward Goff while also understanding he has been part of the problem. I don’t like the future #1s (although Snead hasn’t seemed to need them and is banking that they will be at the end of the round anyway), and the cap management overall which could really hinder the overall talent unless Snead works a lot of existing contract magic. Getting this draft dead red right is critical. The Interior OL if a fuckin problem. And there is no quality depth at OT. That has to get corrected if we want to win a SB. And I don’t care who is at QB save for Watson which ain’t happening unless we trade Stafford to the Texans.

I get that Stafford is good. I don’t think he is that much better than Goff if at all. And his injury history is a concern.

I will root like hell for the Rams and all Ram players - current that is.

Edit: the Lions like and wanted Goff a lot. They had Stafford. Yes he wanted out. But, that tells me they think pretty highly of Goff as he is more than comparable in their eyes.

Edit 2: I do think Matt is better in the pocket, a bit more mobile, and has better/quicker feet than Goff.
