HOUSTON — A potential L.A. solution that would pair the San Diego Chargers with the St. Louis Rams likely would generate the votes necessary for ratification, according to multiple people familiar with the situation, but would require the owners of the two franchises to work out significant differences.

NFL owners began a meeting here Tuesday designed for them to vote on which team or teams will relocate to Los Angeles. The meeting, being held at a Houston hotel, is scheduled to continue Wednesday but one person familiar with the league’s inner workings said there is a chance of a resolution Tuesday. Such an immediate resolution is not definite, however, the person added.

[Chargers’ L.A. bid has strong support among owners]

Many within the sport seemed focused on the possibility of the Chargers joining the Rams to play at a stadium in Inglewood, Calif. The Rams, Chargers and Oakland Raiders have applied to move to Los Angeles but for now, the Chargers and Rams have competing L.A.-area stadium projects. The Chargers and Raiders have proposed a stadium in Carson.

The Los Angeles Times reported Monday that momentum was growing for a Rams-Chargers pairing in Inglewood. There had been talk of such a compromise for months and the Dallas Cowboys have formally proposed it.

[Everything you need to know about the NFL’s L.A. bid]

Such a deal would solve many problems for the owners. The Chargers and their chairman, Dean Spanos, have strong support among the owners to be chosen to go to L.A. One person familiar with the league’s deliberations said Monday there was “no question” that the Chargers’ bid had more support among the owners than those of the other two teams. Others echoed that sentiment.

But some owners seem to prefer the Inglewood stadium proposal made by Rams owner Stan Kroenke. It calls for a palatial stadium, estimated to cost around $2 billion, to be part of a nearly 300-acre project that would include housing, entertainment and shopping components.

The merger of the support for the Chargers and Spanos and the support for the Inglewood stadium would be likely to receive the 24 votes among the 32 NFL teams needed for approval, several people within the sport said.

But first, Spanos and Kroenke would have to agree for the Chargers and Rams to be business partners. There are some obstacles that would have to be overcome.

Spanos has said that he is committed to the Carson project with the Raiders. There have been reports that the personal relationship between Spanos and Kroenke is not close. And when the Rams previously left open the possibility of adding another team as a partner in the Inglewood project, the proposed terms were not for an equal partnership. According to reports, the Rams’ previous proposal was for a second team to share construction costs and stadium revenues without having a say in the stadium design or sharing revenues generated by the project’s surrounding retail, entertainment and housing elements.

Those issues would have to be resolved, probably by Kroenke agreeing to make the Chargers an equal partner in the project. One person close to the situation described such prospective negotiations as “sensitive.”

A deal pairing the Rams and Chargers, if completed, probably would result in the Raiders being given a portion of the relocation fees charged to the L.A.-bound teams. Those fees reportedly would be $550 million per team. The Raiders then could put those funds toward the construction of a new stadium in Oakland or elsewhere. The Raiders and their owner, Mark Davis, previously have explored the possibility of a move to San Antonio. The team also would have the option of pursuing a potential relocation to St. Louis or San Diego.

Didn't ESK offer a 50 -50% split in cost of bldg and equity in the stadium only? I bet that he is wanting the runt Spanos to be a tenant but will settle for 50 - 50. That put him in the drivers seat and likely all that is left to discuss...

I think the Post is not up to date with the latest proceedings of the LA Committee recommending Carson...I'm not feeling good right now.

For Spanos to go from wanting a free stadium to spending 1.2 billion to share Inglewood sounds like a stretch to me.

Something is in the works and I think we all know the owners realize bridges have been burnt in the three cities of interest. Burned to differing degrees though.

Rams to LA is the most certain of all. It's just a matter of how.

den,,, this is going to happen. Nothing has changed. They won't award the Raiders LA just to help Spanos and crush Inglewood in the process. All of the news,, errr, noise is coming from Spanos camp as usual.
I would have liked the 'committee' to have abstained, but the key here is that Spanos/Charaiders /Carson won't get 24 votes.

I think only thing certain is Raiders out! Rams and Chargers, let Spano save face and they play in Carson. Then maybe Spanos gets hit by a bus.
