Still...I think there is another level he has not yet reached, but can.

All things considered, I can count the QBs I’d take over him right now on one hand, and have fingers to spare.

Whoa. I think we agree again, in principle.

I think Goff has had several games at an elite level. He’s clearly shown the attributes to be in the elite category, but he’s not there yet. Too much inconsistency and breakdowns.

Still, there aren’t more than 2 or 3 QBs I’d take over him based on going forward. Rodgers, Mahomes, maybe Wilson. The rest of the really good ones are either too old or injury question marks.

But based on right now, Goff can’t be ranked in the top 5. That can easily change by the end of the year. And that’s my whole argument.

Elite?
Top 5?

Just some numbers to throw around (and I know numbers are not the end all of any conversation).

Passing TD's the last 2 years?
Jared Goff, 60 (#4 in NFL)

Passing yards the last 2 years?
Jared Goff, 8492 (#5 in NFL)

Playoff appearances the last 2 years?
Jared Goff, 2 (Tied for #1 with Tom Brady and Drew Brees)

I don't know about "elite" but that term is totally subjective anyway.
Top 5? Some of the numbers seem to suggest he's just that.

Those by themselves do not qualify someone as elite. Not yet in JG's case. I mean take any of the obvious top 12 qbs in those years and put them on the Rams, does the offense really suffer because of that?

It's not normal or typical to call a 3rd year qb elite. They have to develop into that. Then the question becomes, what do they get from experience that makes them better than a 3rd year qb (no matter how good they were in year 3) and therefore also makes them elite?

I already mentioned that I would like to see him become more consistent.

No I didn't. That was a tough loss but let's examine some numbers. He threw 53 passes completing 35 for 339 yards. He threw a pick and lost a fumble, so that's bad (although the pick didn't result in a Philly score). He also drove the Rams down the field in 1:07 at the end of the first half to tie the game and at the end of the game in 1:08 to get a couple of shots at the end zone. If Reynolds was just a bit more aware we may have tied the game. All in all, it wasn't his best game but bad? Not in my opinion. It was a bad loss and so he gets the blame.

....and I didn't say those numbers made him elite. I said those numbers suggest he's top 5.

And so those 9 words I quoted and everything else you typed after have absolutely nothing to do with my post........unless you're suggesting ranking in the top 5 makes someone 'elite', in which case your argument isn't with me but the top 5 / elite connection. If being ranked in the top 5 makes a guy elite, well then.........

Also with respect to top 5 rankings we know the Rams are #1 in points scored the last two years (1005), tied with New England and New Orleans for #1 in win percentage the last two years (.750) and #3 in yards (behind KC and New England) the last two years (12,522). IMHO, Jared Goff had a pretty big hand in those rankings.

To use Goff's rookie year with terrible coaching, middle school system and poor skill position talent is pretty short sighted. To me that could be considered a redshirt season.

Yup. And I throw out Goff’s rookie year, just like I throw out Lucks injury year.

This is called making reasonable evaluations.
