For the most part last year I thought MCvay did better with the play calling in the redzone. If you can run the ball down there you will score more TD's. In the past he always had a tendency to call pass on first and goal.

What can be frustrating with McVay is when its 1st and goal at the 5 and he calls 3 straight pass plays. They ran the ball all the way down the field in Baltimore. Then 3 straight passes and a field goal after first and goal. McVay has the trust the run game down there more.

i realize everyone wants to be perfect in the redzone, score a TD every time but nobody does and the Rams ranked 8th last year scoring a TD a little over 60% of the time. SF was #1 at 68%...

Agreed, but to Snacks point the Rams do tend to get a little pass happy down inside the 10. I hope with this improved interior line ( and RB depth) we play more physical in the deep redzone.

And that plays a lot of ways. The ability to run in the red zone can also burn clock. Picture a 7 point lead with 5 minutes or less in the game. Not necesary to even score a FG there. Just run, make opponents burn timeouts, gain a first down, ending the game. A strong run game does more than score points. It allows so many options for many situations.

I am happy to see esp. in the last 2-3 seasons, more of a visible effort to respond towards trends in league play.

Washington's numbers for this stat when McV was the OC. So NFL Team Red Zone Scoring Percentage (TD only):
2014...27th
2015...11th
2016...30th

Interestingly, the Wahington total offense in 2016 is ranked 3rd in yards and 12th in points. They're 2nd in passing yards and 9th in rushing yards.

A reminder, Rams in 2023 were 7th in yards, 8th in points, 10th in passing yards, 11th in rushing yards...and 8th in NFL Team Red Zone Scoring Percentage (TD only).

It's also the case that the 2016 Washington team played from behind more than the 2023 Rams did.

I agree ... However it depends on the defensive personnel lined up against is .
.... My biggest gripe is the lack of a true jump ball receiver...our TEs haven't established themselves for that roll

Yes, as I said the offensive tenets he relies on are productive.

Whittington has played as a RB. With his size, he would be a natural in short yardage situations. It will be interesting how they play not just in the red zone but any short yardage down.

They also haven't had an OL that has the size and power that this IOL has. That IMO changes the dynamic in terms of short yardage and red zone, be it with Williams, Corum or Whittington. The Rams have a whole lot of options they haven't had in previous years since they had Saffold, Sullivan, and Whitworth. IMO Jona Jackson, Avila, Dotson, and Havenstein are better.

With that OL the Rams don't need a true power RB like Gurley. When they do they have Whittington.
