Rams’ ‘modern throwback’ jerseys evoke super memories

Torry Holt looks at the Rams’ new jerseys and sees the good old days, the Greatest Show on Turf era and the Super Bowl-winning season of 1999.

“Awesome,” said Holt, the former All-Pro wide receiver. “First thing I said after I saw the uniform was that it has championship written all over it.”

That’s the reaction Rams executives hoped to hear from former players and long-time fans as they unveiled the latest item in the players’ on-field wardrobes Tuesday morning.

What they’re calling a “modern throwback” will be the team’s third jersey in 2021, an addition to the royal-blue, bone-white and bright yellow elements in the uniforms and logo introduced with much fanfare in 2020.

The new shirt features pure-white torsos with solid-blue numbers and yellow sleeves capped by blue Rams horns, with a rams-head logo on the neck and the team’s wordmark on the front.

Rams COO Kevin Demoff said it’s to be worn – with yellow pants – for three games during the upcoming regular season, the Sept. 12 opener against the Chicago Bears, the Nov. 7 meeting with the Tennessee Titans, and the Nov. 15 Monday night road game with the San Francisco 49ers.

Those dates are chosen for a reason. The Rams beat the Titans in the Super Bowl following the 1999 season, and the 49ers plan to wear 1994 throwback uniforms in that Monday game.

Demoff said the new jerseys are meant to invoke the L.A. and St. Louis Rams’ look from 1973 to 1999, a period in which they made the playoffs 15 times and won two NFC titles and that Super Bowl, and their Hall of Famers included Eric Dickerson, Jackie Slater, Jack Youngblood, Kevin Greene, Jerome Bettis, Marshall Faulk, Isaac Bruce, Kurt Warner and Orlando Pace.

Fans and former Rams were consulted in the design process.

Holt, for one, sounded almost as thrilled as if he’d caught that Super Bowl touchdown pass again.

“I’m so happy that the Rams, all those that were involved in the (decision), were kind enough and respectful enough and open enough to continue to incorporate the history of our organization into the modern uniforms that we see now,” Holt, 45, the franchise’s all-time leader in catches (5.5) and receiving yards (80.1) per game, said from Raleigh, N.C.

Holt loved the appearance of Rams horns on the jersey’s shoulders as well as the helmets, giving the impression of real rams ready to charge.

“We know rams, when they get in their battles, that’s what they do, they clash,” Holt said. “That’s what our football team (does), starting with Aaron Donald. They’re looking to clash with the NFL.”

While the ’70s-to-’90s look should be popular, there also are fans who grew up with the white-and-blue (but no yellow) Rams uniforms worn by the Deacon Jones-Merlin Olsen-Roman Gabriel teams of the ’60s and early ’70s.

Demoff said a modern look based on the white-and-blue era could come in 2022 or 2023 if the Rams take the option under NFL rules of adding a fourth uniform and a second helmet.

“You love the passion of fans around these topics,” Demoff said.

I admit I didn’t see this one coming. I like them.
I have to think had they done these on the original release and waited for the bones for their 3rd, people would have been much happier. Or less unhappy. Or maybe not.
