Ramsdude wrote:So now the GIants have to change the name also? It is offensive to "little people".

How about the Buccaneers and Raiders? Weren't they murderer's and thieves?

How about 'dem Cowboys? Nothing but Indian killers! Change it!

How about the Vikings? Pillagers and looters!!

How about the Saints? The Atheist community is now upset!

How about the Titans? ( "gods of the underworld") Upsetting to the Religious community?

How about the Ravens? In some Western traditions, ravens have long been considered to be birds of ill omen, death and evil in general, in part because of the negative symbolism of their all-black plumage and the eating of carrion. Change it now!

How about the Steelers? Lots of people who worked in steel mills developed lung disease from the fumes at the expense of the rich white company owners! Change it now!

How far do we need to go with this? lol

Every team could just change the name to Football Club and attach the city name in front of it. The Los Angeles Football Club. LAFC. Or SFFC. Or NYFC. No offensive names anymore. For cities with two teams like LA and NY they could just go with a hyphen and the first letter of the conference. LAFC-N. NYFC-N. I think I'm on to something. Better get this idea patented fast!

I know the #metoo has been pushed to the side for the time being but I know as a joke a while back it was thrown around changing the names of teams with Male mascots. Rams are males so may need to go to the gender neutral Bighorn Sheep.
Kidding aside, I get both sides. The problem becomes quantifying how many people and how offended they are. I kid you not with the male mascot thing. I know someone who generally really hates it. So how many people and how offended until they change? Obviously the Redskins met that test. When they change their name, what is the next most offensive name? Actually, we should make a list of most to least offensive mascots in the NFL. I actually think the Cowboys or Patriots are going to be in the crosshairs next.

Obviously you can make an argument that any and everything is somehow offense to someone and therefore, i guess, nothing should ever be changed.

But i don't think that argument gets you very far.

Here's how dictionary.com defines redskin:

redskin[ red-skin ]
noun Older Slang: Disparaging and Offensive.
a contemptuous term used to refer to a North American Indian.

This is called the Bellamy salute and is how children used to salute the flag:

Things change. Times change.

It may be time that Snyder changes his team's name but then again he's vowed never to so i guess i'll believe it when i see it...

I agree. I can find someone offended by anything at anytime. Its how many is enough? 100? 1000? 10000? etc... Everyone has their own opinion on that too. So I do understand and I personally think the Redskins name needed to be changed. Do I think people who think its fine are bad people? No. Can you honer any group with a mascot? I bet that gets cut down the middle with people. Some probably would say it is not possible or right to have any group as a mascot. Others would say it is depending on how its done. I know the Redtails is getting thrown around to have a replacement. But may be difficult. Having one group as a mascot and replacing with another may not be the best idea.
So to help myself understand, to give the best apples to apples caparison I can think of (impossible to do I know) I would think if a team with the "American" mascot. Some caricature logo, has to be in a different country, etc... I would not be offended but I know many probably would. But it is almost impossible for me to offended if they "offender" did not do so on purpose.
Guess what I am trying to say is the answer is, there is no answer. Just hope everyone thinks things through and try to do whatever they do and/or say with good intentions and thats all any of us can really do even it is a huge failure.

That's what doesn't make sense to me. When the Redskins were originally named, it doesn't make sense that it was meant as a derogatory term. It seems far fetched that the owner would be ironic about his own team name.

As far as the usage, it can be argued that it was a slur but it can also be argued that it was just descriptive. Even modern day Indian schools use it as a mascot name. Intent should be a much bigger part of this conversation.

As far as who's actually offended by the name, I'd bet a lot of money that it was mostly white people.

The 49ers are now coming under fire for their name, as the Gold Rush was accomplished, in part, through slave labor. They are considering changing their name to commemorate another historical event, the Apollo 11 lunar landing, and rebranding as 69ers.

Okay... so that's not true.

(Except the Gold Rush slaves part - that's actually true.)

The fact that the President is weighing in the way he is makes me think the name change is happening...

Rebranding to the Whiners makes the most sense. 8-)

Then again, the 69ers could work. They could hire a porn star as their coach. Might blow a few but won't choke on the big one.
