I’m sure the agent convinced Jones that he had the leverage being captain, def leader, playcaller, etc. It just might be the Rams’ way of circumventing the agent and letting Jones know he’s not irreplaceable. Jones has stated he wants to stay.

Players and agents generally want to keep the player out of negotiations. Teams would often like to reach out to the player. I think some of that is happening here.

If the RAMS don't think too highly of him enough to let him play this year and resign him for next year then I think it's unlikely we'll get a high draft pick for him. Maybe a seventh round pick and a fork.

McVay said the Rams have had discussion with other teams and the situation is fluid. I think it's possible the Rams want to part ways...

Clearly the Rams arent interested in EJ long term, so it has to be close to the following:

The Rams feel they are good enough at LB and want to get some value for Jones before he leaves in Free Agency and maybe free up some additional cap (maybe 2 million) for trades during the season. I also think this is the Rams trying to do right by a player that is basically in a lame duck season.

First i thought this was about Jones (or his agent) wanting to get paid but now I'm starting to think with the emergence of Speights and, maybe, someone like Kam Curl taking over leadership of the defense, Jones just doesn't figure into this year's plans as much as they thought he would...

I like Jones. Loved him when he first broke through and think he is a solid player. However, as stated by some, the Rams don’t pay LBers big money contracts, especially 2 down backs as Jones often was. I think he is a good player who does nothing “special” He plays the run well but for me, misses too many tackles. He isn’t great in coverage. He was blitzed often by Raheem but rarely seemed to get through to the QB. He also has a knee issue that seems like it might linger throughout his career.

In no way is this an indictment of him, just the fact that what he will be seeking in $$$ will likely be more towards the higher end of the spectrum. So, based on the Rams past with LBer contracts, injury, $$ wanted by Jones, and a possible ongoing injury issue, the can totally see them cutting ties with him at the end of the season.

Now this potential trade before the Reg season is very surprising but they obviously have a basis to allow him to explore trades if he and his management team deem it is the way to go. Fans have a tendency to overrate their own players. I think the Rams would be lucky to get above a 4th for him but what do I know. I didn’t sleep at a Quality Inn last night so take it as it is.

When the Rams said they weren't interested in extended Jones prior to camp, the writing was mostly on the wall. But if the Rams felt that way, you would think they would have drafted the next ILB in the most recent draft. So now it must be Speights and the overall improvement at the team at safety. Maybe a little about Shula scheme too and the fact that Jones has had knee issues.
