Want me to put him in a flight jacket on mars?

On second thought, never mind. That's too much like work.

Okay, #30 was either so overwhelmingly in McCutcheon's favor or it just isn't a very iconic number. Here's a few more that I dug up:
Zac Stacy.
Can't believe how short-lived his solid running lasted. I still don't understand what happened with him and am sad to see him gone. He was a great value pick and a guy I thought would at least be a solid backup for years to come.

Ron Johnson.
This guy's totally off my radar. I feel like I know a decent amount of players from NFL history but I completely unfamiliar with this guy who was a pretty good RB. This guy was an all-pro and in various years led the league in carries twice, yards from scrimmage once and TD's once. He went to the pro bowl two times, in '70 and '72. Which is probably why he's not as well known. The Giants were in a down era and those were the only two winning teams he was on.

Mark van Eeghen.
I always knew of him because he was a Raider and most of them were pretty well known in my neck of the woods. He was never a pro-bowler but he was pretty good and put up multiple 1,000 yard seasons back when it meant something. Those great '70's Raiders teams were more about Kenny Stabler and the passing game on offense but van Eeghen and Clarence Davis were a big part of their success. Plus, it's still unusual to see a white guy as the feature RB AND putting up 1,000+ yards.

Ahman Green.
Green was one of the top RB's in the league for quite a few years but never "the" guy. Made his hay with the Favre-led Packers and put up very good numbers. They just came at a time when other RB's in the league were putting up historic numbers. Couple that with being secondary to Favre and the passing game and this guy's fame is never going to be too high.

Terrel Davis.
And, probably the best for last. Davis was all-pro 3 straight years, led the league in rushing once and TD's twice. Had one of the greatest single seasons a RB has ever had. His career was cut short by injuries but still gets serious mention as a HOF candidate. Deservedly so IMO. If not for this guy, Elway wouldn't be sitting where he is now. Time seems to have faded the fact that Elway rode Davis' back to his only SB wins. It seems that Elway is heralded in the pantheon of NFL lore while Davis is just a footnote and it's a crime. Those should be Davis' SB victories and he should be remembered as the catalyst.

I didn't really come across any big names in baseball that made #30 iconic. I'll let someone else come up with an NBA example if they want. So, in my opinion, Terrell Davis should take the crown as the most iconic #30.

I remember John Madden saying he told John Robinson (his good friend) that when he first heard that Dickerson was wearing #29 he thought it was a bad idea, he thought it was not a number worn by great RBs. Robinson told Madden that the RB makes the number great, not the other way around.

Here's hoping that Gurley makes #30 another great number in Rams history.
