AvengerRam wrote:I like the name "Redtails." Not only would it be a great tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen, its also a cool bird, the red-tailed hawk, that lives in the DC area.

It would also fit in with their fight song, "Hail to the Redskins" (other words could be altered and updated to fit the new name).

Unfortunately still highly racially motivated.

The Redtails were a segregated unit of the Army Air Corp that almost didn't participate in WWII.

I am still feeling triggered by that. You wouldn't understand.

There’s a major street in suburban St. Louis called Lindbergh Blvd. Its a street/highway that runs for like 30 miles. The closest analogy would be Sepulveda in Los Angeles.

During WW2 part of the street/boulevard was renamed because of Charles Lindbergh’s support for Nazi Germany. It’s about a 3 or 4 mile stretch that changes names. Now nearly 75 years later theres a fresh push to drop the Lindbergh name from the rest of the road because of his anti-semitism. Especially in the heavily Jewish suburbs that Lindbergh Blvd passes through. I guess there’s supposed to be a protest today.

What next? Pull down the Spirit of St. Louis replica from the lobby at Lambert Intl Airport and the real one at the Smithsonian because it was flown by an anti-Semite.

Most all what we know about Hitler today was not known during the war. Including his personal beliefs and horrors.

How ever you want to call it, Fascism, Socialism, Communism, all are popular Leftist ideas in our culture today. I am not talking about Liberals or Conservatives. Just Leftists.

I'd keep the real one at the Smithsonian, because it's a museum and an educational piece. I'd take it out of the airport because it's not something that should be honored.

You can remember and acknowledge history, but you don't need to place things like that in situations where they are, effectively, being celebrated.

Most of these confederate statues are recent things. The Stone Mountain one has always bugged me.

Guess when they opened Stone Mountain park? On the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's assassination.

I understand perfectly. You have every right to your perspective, and I'm not going to tell you that you are wrong.

What I will tell is that, based upon many opinion pieces and comments I've read, adopting a name commemorating the Tuskegee Airmen is viewed by many in the black community as a worthwhile tribute that honors a group of men who did great things at a time when their contributions were not adequately appreciated and recognized.

It also wouldn't be the first honor of this type. There is a section of I-95 in South Carolina known as the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial Highway, as well as a film titled "Redtails."

Again, if you don't like the name and what it denotes, that's your prerogative.

It is too close and easily misunderstood.

Needs to go. It triggers me. You just don't understand.

HUH? Does anyone really think that the Cleveland Browns were named after the color of some players skin? Good grief. Even Jim Brown would be a stretch.

US history is what it is. Celebrating some prominent men and many of their actions is wrong.
Forgetting what went on is wrong too as things that came before shaped who we are where we are now.
I feel many of these monuments should be moved into museums where folks who choose to learn about history can within proper perspective.
Protesters must be careful not to blurr the lines now that the problems of the past have everyone's attention,, again.

In fact.. the argument would be that we need to teach MORE about these guys, so people fully understand America's racist past.

I mean.. seriously... how many of you knew about the "Black Wall Street" massacre before the last year? I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't.

I was editing my post while you pointed that out.

For sure, there is a heightened awareness and open mind to this subject matter now. Honestly I knew very little about the behavior and backgrounds of many of the men celebrated with statuaries.
The destruction has brought the awareness. Now it's time to reload history properly to venues that are about history and for those who choose to view it. Not celebrated for all. But should never be forgotten...!

There's a book called "Lies my teacher told me" that splains how the history we were taught is not the history that happened. Why? Maybe because it was easier to teach a perception instead of a reality. Ironic considering two of the most important qualities in American society are honor and honesty. Or more lies? :D

So now the GIants have to change the name also? It is offensive to "little people".

How about the Buccaneers and Raiders? Weren't they murderer's and thieves?

How about 'dem Cowboys? Nothing but Indian killers! Change it!

How about the Vikings? Pillagers and looters!!

How about the Saints? The Atheist community is now upset!

How about the Titans? ( "gods of the underworld") Upsetting to the Religious community?

How about the Ravens? In some Western traditions, ravens have long been considered to be birds of ill omen, death and evil in general, in part because of the negative symbolism of their all-black plumage and the eating of carrion. Change it now!

How about the Steelers? Lots of people who worked in steel mills developed lung disease from the fumes at the expense of the rich white company owners! Change it now!

How far do we need to go with this? lol
