/zn/ wrote:Suh got 19.06 M 2 years ago, Miller got 19.08 1 year ago. The rumors before this have already been that the Rams offer was in the 20 M range. So it would be both highest offer for a DT and highest for a defender. Well, so far. When Mack comes up he will most likely get more than Donald, just because contracts go up.

The story from other reporters is that the amount is not the hang-up, it's the structure.

Front loaded likely means this year. Donald knows that the Rams don't have the cap space to frontload the guaranteed money into this year. It's likely that the contract once signed won't begin until next year. There's no way around that. As long as the money is guaranteed why does he care if he has to wait until next year? Is he broke?

If the Rams are offering $70M guaranteed how big of a deal is the "structure"?

I seriously doubt they are proposing that all the money is paid at the end of the contract.

$70M has just set your family for life, and your kids families if managed.

and so would a lot less, so what? since when have players been interested in getting paid just enough to get by, or just enough to live comfortably? hell koufax and drysdale held out together, didn't report until the dodgers paid up, even tho they were making almost 20 times the average u.s. salary... folks bitching about what others make, what others deserve, priceless.

Good dodge.

What is the right amount of guaranteed for a DT? $100M? $150M? Heck, maybe Donald can play LT on offense as well. Then we can give him $200M. Maybe he can play QB too.

I suggest the Rams just play the games. If the defense doesn't fall apart completely then let him sit. He is just one player out of 53.

That is where I'm at right now. Time to focus on Rams football. If he sits the whole season he sits it. The only position that would be make or break is the quarterback position. And that is only if he's that good. No one player on our team is make or break.

the right amount is what works for both sides, if this amount can't be agreed upon, move to plan b, or cut bait and move on.

By painting Donald in a bad light which the Rams have been very careful not to do up to this point. To me this represents a possible change in the situation not a dirty move by the Rams.

And i can't say this part enough: This is all speculation since none of knows how accurate the information we're getting is.

But if the Rams are making what most people would consider fair/generous offers to Donald and it's not enough for him (again we don't know but it's leaning a little that way imo) then i'd expect the Rams at some point soon to say, "look we've made you some very generous offers that we'd love for you to take but if they're not acceptable to you, we expect you to honor the contract your currently playing under."

And i would, as a fan, support that.

As zn has pointed out Donald's holdout isn't really much of a holdout since they've been actively negotiating and both sides were okay with Donald not reporting until the deal gets done.

But if negotiations break down (and maybe that's what these leaks are telling us), different situation and then it would be time for Donald to show up under his current contract and play for big money later which is risky for him but still not a bad situation to be in...

I say we let the market decide what NFL players are worth in our economy.

How do you propose we do it?

What you and I propose means absolutely nothing, as you know, and the market always determines the outcome.

We have a player trying to reset the market, it appears, and the team will suffer for it.

I don't like it, not that AD gives a crap about what one Rams fan thinks. It has no real impact on any of our lives, other than forum fodder before the games begin.

Starting Sunday I am hoping to forget about this entirely.
