My third-favorite September gambling rule: Search for undervalued teams with easy schedules that might sneak up on everybody early.

Uh-oh, wait a second — I think we’re getting attacked by another one of the five weirdest videos of the 1980s!


Oh yeah! RAM IT! The Rams were blessed with four games against the AFC South (the NFL’s version of ABC’s prime-time schedule), including three against Scott Tolzien (hold this thought), the Blaketanic and (maybe) Macho Man Tommy Savage. They get two shots at the rebuilding Niners and two at Arizona during The Season Carson Palmer’s Arm Might Just Fall Off. They play 2017 interception leader Carson Wentz and Drew “I’m Secretly Shaky Outdoors on Grass” Brees at home, and they play Captain Checkdown (Sam Bradford) and Eli “There’s Always a 25 Percent Chance I Take a Messy Dump at Home” Manning on the road.

Every season, at least one playoff team makes us say, “Wait, what?” 2016? 9–7 Detroit. 2015? 9–7 Washington. 2014? 7–8–1 Carolina. 2013? 9–7 San Diego. (RIP.) You get the idea. I’m not saying the Rams are definitely that team, but …

A. They start the season with home games against Indy and Washington before traveling to San Francisco to play the one and only Brian Hoyer.

B. They fleeced Buffalo for Sammy Watkins (the first real receiver they’ve had since Torry Holt), who had spent the past three years either wide open with passes sailing over his head, wide open with passes bouncing toward him, or in doctor’s offices getting his injured foot misdiagnosed.

C. Kevin Hart came to a Rams preseason practice and brought them “good energy.”

D. They upgraded from Jeff Fisher to A Human Being With A Head, Two Arms and Two Legs Who’s Not Jeff Fisher (Sean McVay).

E. And they stole defensive guru Wade Phillips from Denver … who, by the way, is 16–11 against Indy since 1989 and 9–2 against them when they don’t have Manning or Luck.

That’s almost enough to make me cast aside major, major, MAJOR concerns about Jared Goff. (Repeat: Almost!) I’m not as concerned about 31-year-old coach Sean McVay because I work with a bunch of young people. Millennials are underrated. They work their asses off, they’re used to doing five things at the same time, and their biggest fault is that they’re a little too uptight/sensitive/idealistic. Why wouldn’t those qualities work for a head coach? We have 32 head coaches every year and 25 of them always suck. Either Sean McVay will surprise everyone, or he’ll suck while working way too hard and doing five things at a time while being a little too uptight, sensitive, and idealistic.

(By the way, they upgraded the fan experience at Rams games! My favorite tidbits from this piece: The Rams claim they made only 60,000 tickets available in an effort to ease the traffic in and out, and not because only a handful of people in L.A. give a @#$%& about the Rams; they added more video boards because apparently sports fans in 2017 like being able to see replays; and they realized that “more water” would be good. L.A. FOOTBALL IS BACK!)

My second-favorite September gambling rule: Always jump on bad QBs on the road.

With Andrew Luck out for between two and 37 weeks, the Colts are handing the reins to 30-year-old Scott Tolzien, who started three games (he’s 0–2–1) and has two career touchdowns (and seven picks). This week, embattled Colts coach Chuck Pagano calmed everyone’s nerves by using the phrases “game manager” and “manage the game” over 2,530 times and assuring fans, “It’s not his first rodeo.” No, it’s his fourth rodeo — and in the other three, he got stomped. We get to lay fewer than 7 points against Scott Tolzien on the road? This is beautiful!

My first-favorite September gambling rule: Target teams that look like they’re headed for The Year From Hell, then go against them.

You know, like the Colts. They have no clue when Luck is coming back. They watched former GM Ryan Grigson throw away an improbable THREE straight drafts. They recently earned a “Truly Tragic Season Is Possible, Colts Fans” headline from Indy columnist Gregg Doyel. They even tried to win a trade with Bill Belichick, which is about as easy as smuggling heroin into Canada. I’m shorting the Colts this season.
