I guess taking over play calling sealed the deal.

Giving up or taking back play calling is almost never a good sign.

How 'bout that Sean Payton, from hot seat to in the COY conversation, just like that...

I have to admit I was a bit jaded when I saw billionaires like Kroenke and Tepper just buy NFL teams outright and dump truckloads of money into their investments to just manufacture a world-beating franchises.

Apparently, there is either skill or luck (probably both!) involved in the venture. And the Rams are looking like a lot better investment as a whole than what the Panthers have done with that owner money.

I guess time will tell what happens with the Broncos and their wealthy owner...

Pretty interesting how much things have changed over time. Before the NFL became huge, owning a team was not such a big deal, you didn't have to be a billionaire to own one and some of the original owners/families, their entire worth is basically their team. New owners get rich outside of football and that's what allows them to buy.

This article is old but talks about the owners of each team (at the time):

They were talking about Tepper yesterday on Sirrius. They said with trading away McCaffrey and trading away all those picks for Young, the fans will soon be chanting "sell the team". But this guy isn't going anywhere. Owning an NFL team is a business guaranteed to make money, regardless of performance. They were saying being a successful businessman gives some the impression they can own an NFL team and automatically be successful. His problem is he fired Rivera and hired 2 head coaches in 4 years, soon to be 3 in 5 years (Rhule, Reich and whomever becomes the #3). He doesn't have a clue and needs somebody with "football knowledge" to advise him. What's worse is they've had 5 different QBs in 5 years since Newton left. Allen, Bridgewater, Darnold, Mayfield and Young.

Running a hedge fund is probably not a great precursor to be a good NFL owner. When trading stocks, you cut your losses quickly and let the winners ride. I think any coach now with Carolina is going to be hard pressed to succeed with what has been left to deal with.
