This deal was massive so I get that we couldn’t pay that, but why not tag him in the first place?!!

Now we have to use one of our precious draft picks on a kicker which is always a gamble.

Right now it’s hard to see what the Rams are trying to accomplish. It’s not clear to me how the Rams are planning on improving so much offensively.

The Franchise Tag for Kicker/Punter = $5,393,000. We don't have that much for a kicker.

Kicker is just not that important and the Norwood and Walsh examples are kind of one-off against the bigger picture. If you need a K in those critical situations then you only have yourself to blame for being in that position.

A couple more examples:
Vinatieri deserves credit for making important kicks but the fact is, 2/3 to 3/4 of the kickers in the NFL can and should make 48 yard field goals in a dome .. he didn't do anything that special and the Rams came close to winning that game.

Matt Gay at the end of the TB playoff game. Important kick, yes. Would I trust Sloman to make that kick, uh lol hell no. But the Bucs came close to winning that game because of a whole bunch of other things that didn't have to do with Gay (notwithstanding Gay's own earlier error of a miss..)

And don't forget Nagy who let his whole K situation get into his head that entire offseason. That was cringey to watch.

I think we are about to find out this year how important. Personally I expect us to be in lots of close games next season where a kicker can be the difference. Hopefully we find a guy, however the last time this we had this issue the guys the Rams had in camp failed.
