Matthew Stafford is one of the NFL's most prolific quarterbacksStafford is currently 16th in NFL history with 45,109 passing yards and 16th in passing touchdowns with 282 (8 behind Colts legend Johnny Unitas). He just finished his age 32 season, averaging 4,231 yards over the previous 10 seasons (despite missing eight games in 2019). If he were to maintain that pace for another four seasons (no guarantee given NFL aging curves and Stafford's injury history) he'd total 62,033 yards in his career, good for sixth place in NFL history between Dan Marino (61,361) and Philip Rivers (63,440). Ben Roethlisberger (60,348), Matt Ryan (55,765) and Aaron Rodgers (51,245) are ahead of Stafford on the list and still active.Stafford has averaged 26 touchdowns per season in that same stretch; give him four more years at that rate and he'll have 386, ninth all-time between Roethlisberger and Eli Manning. Rodgers (412) and Ryan (347) are also ahead of him.He was the fastest quarterback in NFL history to reach 20,000, 30,000 and 40,000 yards.2. Matthew Stafford hasn't had much support from the run game with the LionsThe Lions have had 11 100-yard rushing games with Stafford at quarterback.Eleven.That's 6.5% of the games he's played in.Here's the list: Jahvid Best, Kerryon Johnson (three times), Kevin Smith (twice), Reggie Bush (three times), D'Andre Swift and Miikel Leshoure.3. Colts related.4. Matthew Stafford made 3 playoff games but ... Do you know who the last Lions quarterback was to play in three playoff games?Bobby Layne. He appeared in four: 1952, 1953, 1954 and 1957.That was 63 years ago. And, yes, Stafford had just four winning seasons to show for all those passing yards and touchdowns but I left one stat out of the analysis above.Another statistic worth noting: Stafford has the second-most game-winning drivers in the NFL since he was drafted in 2009 with 38. (Drew Brees has 39). Stafford has needed to lead a game-winning drive in 51.4% of the games he's won, the highest percentage by a quarterback with at least 50 starts since 2009.5. What is the injury risk with Matthew Stafford? There are two ways to looks at this.a. Stafford has been on the gameday injury report for the following body parts during his career, according to pro-football-reference.com: hip (10), shoulder (8), knee (7.5 times), thumb (4), back (3), ribs (3), finger (2.5), ankle (2), groin (1), quadricep (1), arm (1), hand (1), foot (1),That's 13 body parts for a total of 44 games, or 22.9% of all the games he could have played in.That's a lot.b. Stafford has played in 165 games, or 85.9% of them. He missed 19 games in his first two seasons, since then, he's played in 152 of a possible 160 games, 95%.There's definitely an injury risk, but no one can question Stafford's toughness GO RAMS !!! His first couple years were spent training him not to fade backwards under pressure, but he never really learned to use a pocket and step up consistently. I thought coming out of college Goff had a good pocket presence--boy was I wrong on that one.I think a telling point in the relationship was the Jets game where they threw all the zero blitzes at Goff and he handled it terribly. McVay after the game said the solutions were there in the offense, and they should have been executed and they just weren't. That pointed the finger squarely at Goff, which McVay never had done previously. You can't waste valuable practice time re-learning things that are already in your arsenal. In the end, I think defenses just learned to adjust to Goff faster than he could adjust to them. That is what I think frustrated McVay. 2 by Elvis 3 years 10 months ago Total posts: 40093 Joined: Mar 28 2015 Los Angeles Administrator Re: HOW DID IT GO SO SOUTH SO FAST?
