Wow, another crappy document when billions are stake.

So when does the Chargers lease expire? It says 2020, but then talks about a renegotiated date.

Despite the fact that then-NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue had just said publicly in January 2003 that San Diego would not be eligible to host Super Bowls unless a new stadium was constructed, the Chargers first evaluated the possibility of renovating Qualcomm Stadium yet again, but two studies by architectural firms - one retained by the Chargers, and the other retained by the City of San Diego - independently came to the same conclusion that renovating the aging stadium would cost nearly as much as building a new stadium.

To be fair, same reason the CVC (not St. Louis proper) didn't accept the arbitrator's ruling in favor of the Ram's $700M proposed upgrades to the dome. That would have been dumb (not only spending that amount, but causing shut down of the EDJ to other events, losing revenue from other events held there, closing areas around the EDJ, and finding a place for the Rams to play temporarily) when you can build a new stadium for almost that amount.

Even in 2015, with relocation speculation intensifying, the franchise was able to increase its season ticket sales by more than 5,000 over 2014 season ticket sales.

Yet, they want to get out of Dodge while fielding a team even crappier than the Rams...

the City's unprecedented "quickie" EIR

OMG, they used that metaphor...

the Team's current stadium, built originally for baseball in the 1960s, has continued to deteriorate as a financially strapped City has been unable to make necessary repairs.

Which is really the root of all this. Cities...and us as taxpayers...don't have the coin to finance stadiums for billionaires. If you have a Jones or Kroenke that can do it themselves...that should be model going forward. You can't afford it? Well, then accept your shitty digs, the money from all the people that will pay top dollar to come anyway, and rake in those TV and merchandising dollars...or sell to someone who can foot the bill.

NFL owners and passionate fans want to point the finger at the localities involved. To me, that's silly. Why are we paying for stadiums for billionaires? The NFL itself is the really one to blame here...wanting to extract money from the you's and me's in StL, SD, Oak, wherever...and for allowing competing LA proposals to get out in the first place. Not that competition from independent stadium proposals for LA would be bad (already had those), but allowing 3!!! teams to announce plans is just an asinine way to run one of the most profitable business in the world.

Oh and Bob Iger must be one important rich dude. Because there's two basic arguments in this doc. One, we've exhausted all possibilities. And two, we got another billionaire on our side that can make all of us even more coin.

Kind of wishing I didn't like football and the Rams so much right now. Drunken rant over.//

This document is garbage.

Compared to this Chargers document, the Rams doc looks like the Federalist Papers.

My goodness, who is writing this trash? Wouldn't Iger be involved? It's mind boggling how anyone can look at this Chargers document and have confidence in the Carson project.

Do 20 owners actually prefer Carson? What are they looking at that no one is showing us? Is there some sort of grand unveiling planned for Monday similar to Steve Jobs announcing the first iPhone?

Rappaport made it clear that the owners overwhelmingly prefer Inglewood. And this document does nothing to counter that argument.

I wonder what the Raiders proposal will be? "Uh, we want to move in with the Chargers because Dean is my pal".

It will be something like, "yeah, yeah, what Dean said"

Mind boggling myself. It is written as a foregone conclusion that the Chargers are just plainly entitled to the move. And Spanos needs Davis so they can bankrupt each other building a stadium plus relocation fees.

My impression is that those 13 years of negotiating with the city of San Diego had an air of Dean always trying to position himself to invest little to no cash. Does this not make a huge difference? Unlike St Louis with Stan, at least the city was always showing an interest to work with Spanos.

All the pieces of this puzzle is so flipping obvious who and what should be going where and when. Any language about mitigating lawsuits has nothing to do with real anti- trust. This sure does reek of this right now.

Yeah, these aren't the most sophisticated of business owners.

I missed this. The Chargers increased season tix sales over last yr by 5K tix?

Yup.

The common dog finances the elite in ever corner of society. That's how the game has always worked for as long as anyone can recall. It's just in other corners, the players and the plays are more sophisticated, so harder to reveal.

The NFL has defintely run a horrible playbook on this one. But then again, who's really paying attention to the detail? Just a few of us here, and maybe elsewhere.

A politician chairman herding [billionaire] cats is not a recipe for strategic sophistication.

Always thought it would have been fun to get into the football business, but then when I get insights like this, I'm glad I'm just a dumb fan :)

What does he think the Raiders playing in the same stadium will do to his mythical 25% fan base in LA????

All the conclusions in all 3 applications will be challenged or expanded by Goodell's letter to the ownership. That's why St Louis sent the letter directly to Goodell. The heart of the applications are in the supporting exhibits that weren't released. I would imagine that there's a detailed timeline for the entire construction timelines. They would also include market specific projections in the current home markets and for LA.

No kidding, and welcome aboard.

Spanos is either bluffing or he thinks being 2nd banana in L.A. is worth more than being the pride of SD.

He could be right. The Clippers sold for $2 billion. So maybe a damaged NFL brand in L.A. is worth twice a pristine one in SD.

Either that or he's playing hard ball up to the very last minute...

Thanks for the welcome, sorry about blasting on the scene...

Also, how can the NFL force Stan to sign away his lawsuit rights after they signed on to the lease (allowing him to move) bringing the Rams to STL???
