Do you think Morrall could have been starter on many teams ?
??? He WAS the starter on many teams. He was a pro-bowler for Pittsburgh in '57, an All-Pro for Baltimore in '68 and a pro-bowler for Miami in '72. Was the QB for most of the Dolphins undefeated season. Had very solid years for Detroit in '63 and NYG in '65. He won the AFC MVP, NFL MVP, Comeback Player of the Year, led the league in passing and won a Super Bowl.

The guy was a journeyman to be sure, but he was certainly starting caliber.

I guess my question should have been, was he ever the starter by choice and not by attrition? He clearly was a solid player when looking at all the successful teams he played for.

He was drafted in the first round by the 49ers and was the regular starter in Pittsburgh, Detroit and NYG. By the time Shula got him, he was more of a backup but he was also 34 years old too. Not to mention being behind Unitas and Griese on the depth charts.

The 49ers traded him to Pittsburgh for two #1's, Pittsburgh traded him to Detroit so they could get Bobby Layne. He got hurt in Detroit and they traded him to NYG who were in rebuild mode, as well as Morrall being on the wrong side of 30.

The guy was just good enough to be a commodity but his championship caliber ability wasn't realized until Shula got him.

Thanks molker. You have the Morrall (of his) story down. ;) I mostly remember the haircut and being bummed Johnny U wasn't playing in game I went to as a kid. I'd say he clearly qualifies for den's list.

Well, I did mention it two posts before he did. ;)

The #6 has got some infamy attached to it in the NFL:

Jay Cutler
The Jeff George of this era. Not to mention looking far too much like Jim Breuer than an athlete ever should.
Image

Bubby Brister
If only his play on the field was as good as his movie-star looks.
Image

Marc Wilson
Had some big shoes to fill, replacing 2-time SB Champ Jim Plunkett. Not to mention living up to the legacy of many previous Raiders QB's. Never really did either. Plus, I never need much of an excuse to post a pic of one of the McDonalds trading cards.
Image

Mark Sanchez
Another guy who's looks far outweigh his ability. Although Sanchez has done some good things in this league, I think it will be difficult for him to ever rise above being Rob Ryan's "pet", not to mention the infamous butt-fumble.
Image

Rolf Benirschke
Will always think of him as the kicker for the Air Coryell Chargers but his NFL career was overshadowed and cut short due to ulcerative colitis.
Image

Ray Lucas
The poster child for "everyone's favorite QB is the backup QB". Physical specimen who was often given chances around the goal line because of his size but never could make it as a regular starter. Seems like he was always being given a chance though. Playing behind the likes of Vinny Testaverde and Jay Fiedler helps explain why fans seemed to want to see what he could do.
Image

Brian Hoyer
Even more than Lucas, this guy keeps getting chances as a starter. I think he's a very good backup but what teams are thinking when they hand him the proverbial keys, I just don't know. When's the last time you saw this kind of picture for the Browns though? It had to be posted just because it's so rare. I wonder if that was a preseason game? ;)
Image

Dan Orlovsky
I think this image perfectly encapsulates ol' Dan(and the hapless Lions of the time). The guy was really giving it 100% and trying...really trying to make a play. He just had no idea that he'd run out of the back of the end zone for a safety.
Image

Matt Cavanaugh
Was never much more than a backup but was around enough that his name is recognizable. Has gone on to become a coach but is just good enough to continually get crappy assignments. Mostly, I just wanted to post a picture of his Topps card that I had when I was a kid.

There's plenty of kickers and punters who've also worn #6 but who wants to talk about kickers and punters? But if your team has a QB wearing the #6...don't get your hopes up.
