Nobody made the Saints hold the HC position for Payton. That was their voluntary choice. A lot of people thought they should (and would), just part ways with him. Would have been simpler. But they chose not to. They wanted him back.

The fact that there's no similar scandal associated with McVay and the Rams is immaterial. The two situations are very different, obviously.

And had the Saints won a championship under Joe Vitt, the way the Lakers did under Paul Westhead when Jack McKinney was injured, then things certainly might have turned out very differently. But they didn't, and Payton took over again after a year off.

Nothing to see here. Using the term interim was wrong. They will say he’s the head coach. He will be the head coach.

There will be a clause in his contract that if Sean Mcvay comes back. Mcvay resumes head coaching responsibilities. It sucks but that’s the way it is.

It would be better if Sean Mcvay didn’t come back as opposed to leave and then come back a year. Because everybody in the locker room would be saying when’s he coming back if he’s coming back. Media fans etc.

Lets face it. The NFL is a money driven entity. Buddies mean nothing with literally hundreds of millions of dollars at stake. I wasn't privy to the conversations had before the last HC contract was signed but I truly doubt there was an understanding about something like the present state of things being a possibility. At very least Sean is not handling his Ram(and personal) business very well. He has already harmed his reputation both now and for future NFL coaching possibilities. This will likely always be in the back of a future owner's mind. As good as he was as a coach he's been that bad with handling this. IF the noise about how he can handle loss and adversity is true then he'll never be suited for this position. There are Navy Seals then there's every other "tough guy" who will never quite get there.

will be made by sports&social media to look callous & uncaring towards the sensitive issues of mental health, job burnout, proper pre-planning of child-rearing, Ukraine war carnage/suffering, etc etc

Dick Vermeil was noble and fell on his sword. IE. Vermeil stepped-down/resigned his HC spot, and basically & honestly said, "it turns out that it IS TOO HOT in the kitchen for me....and I need to get out. Sorry to all my coaches, players, and to all the Eagle fans for letting you down."

You can say whatever you like about the current McVay situation. However, the comparison above is laughable.

Dick Vermeil had two horrible seasons, and then was virtually forced to hire Mike Martz who was undeniably instrumental in winning a Super Bowl immediately.

Sean McVay was a big success immediately and had five excellent seasons, including two Super Bowls and a Super Bowl victory before this one bad season.

So yeah, I would say there's much more to be thankful for McVay for us longtime Rams fans than Vermeil, who I do like by the way.
