(Cause "4" is the wrong number for Goff. It's 5 of the last 8 games, including the post-season. And that's not even the total for the season. If you go outside the last 8 games and add the Denver game, the total is 6. )Remember, the argument was never that Goff, when he is more consistent, will not have any below average games. (I very carefully avoid saying that. Look back.) It's that he will not have bunches of them as in the 5 of 8 scenario at the end of the season and including the post-season (and I add here, he would have a lower number overall too.) Do you think Goff can improve? Both Goff and McVay think he can, and in fact McVay is working on things this off-season that will help Goff and the whole offense with that. It's a deliberate plan, one that accounts for the flaws that showed up in those games. (In that 5 of 8 games patch the Rams, btw, averaged 18.4 points a game. Add Denver and it's 19.2. Taken by itself that would rank 27th in the league. In the other 13 games, the avg. is 36.2 per game. Taken by itself, that would rank 1st in the league.) Taken just as a pure total, 6 below average games, whether bunched or not, is the worst on that list. A more consistent veteran qb ought to have fewer than 6 total, but that aside, the real argument is that you won't get a big patch of them, like the Rams with 5 of 8 games at the end of the season. by max 5 years 11 months ago Total posts: 5714 Joined: Jun 01 2015 Sarasota, FL Hall of Fame Sando comments on his QB tiers report POST #243 TOPIC AUTHOR Patrick Mahomes tossed 50 touchdown passes on his way to NFL MVP honors last season, so there was no surprise when most 2019 Quarterback Tiers voters placed him alongside Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and the other Tier 1 selections. The fact that seven of the 55 QB Tiers voters dared to place Mahomes in the second tier instead of the first did not sit well with Chiefs fans on my various social media timelines. Those seven votes head my list of things I didn’t love about the results. I’ve heard your complaints on Cam Newton and Matt Ryan as well. Both are addressed here. There was also much to like about the results, and I’ve hit on three areas in particular below. As usual, I’m happy to continue the discussion in the comments section. See you there.Three things I did not love1. Those seven Tier 2 votes for MahomesEntering the project, I thought there was a chance Mahomes would tie for the top spot. Rodgers had been a little shaky. Brady figured to be up there. Mahomes was surging and arguably the best of the bunch — certainly better than Drew Brees was late in the 2018 season.Having seven voters place Mahomes in the second tier wasn’t a travesty, but it did push down the Kansas City quarterback into the fourth overall spot, below Rodgers, Brady and Brees. They’re all in the top tier, of course. One voter who placed Mahomes in the top tier pushed back against the idea that Mahomes should have to prove it with another strong season.“It’s like Hall of Fame voters who differentiate between first-ballot Hall of Famers and everyone else,” this voter protested.2. Cam Newton feels too lowNewton barely missed the second tier, so it’s fair to say the league sees him as Tier 2 when healthy and lower when coming off injury. That seems reasonable. I just thought Newton and the Carolina offense functioned well enough when the quarterback was healthy last season to give him more benefit of the doubt. That said, input from outlier voters carries value. The two voters who placed Newton in the fourth tier faced Carolina last season. They have faced Newton multiple times in recent seasons. These voters cast informed ballots. While most would disagree with their assessments, there’s no harm in filing away in our minds the idea that Newton could be nearing the end from a physical standpoint.3. Dilution of Tier 1It’s great having so many quality quarterbacks, but I’m with the voter who thinks having one-fourth of the NFL’s starters in the top tier feels like too many.“I like to think of the 1s being so rare over the years — Peyton, Brady, Rodgers,” this voter said. “Then you take a breath and say it’s (Drew) Brees, whoever else.”I’d put Brady, Rodgers and Mahomes in my top tier and then have an expanded second tier stocked with quarterbacks who are really good but have holes in their games. Some would debate whether Rodgers belongs in the top tier based on his play last season, but he’s been so great that I’d make him play his way out of the top tier decisively.I also would not argue with Atlanta Falcons fans who thought that if the top tier was going to include eight quarterbacks, it might as well have had nine, including Matt Ryan.Three things I really liked1. Upgraded QB qualityThere’s much to like about quarterback quality across the league. Arguing about whether there are too many quarterbacks in the top tier is a great sign for the league. The 32 quarterbacks in this QB Tiers class combined for a 2.50 average tier, best in six years of balloting. The eight quarterbacks in Tier 1 were the most on record and double the average for the previous three years. At the other end, the quarterbacks in Tier 4 had a higher average this year (3.77) than in any previous year.Nick Foles, Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold (2.8 combined average) joined the ballot this year, replacing 2018 starters Blake Bortles, Tyrod Taylor and Josh McCown (3.4 average). That is an obvious upgrade. Mahomes made a big jump, and Deshaun Watson proved himself over a full season, while Andrew Luck’s return to form further upgraded the ballot. The fourth tier offers promise (Lamar Jackson, Darnold, Mitch Trubisky, etc.) instead of fading journeymen.Meanwhile, some of the oldest quarterbacks remain productive, with Rodgers, Brady, Brees, Philip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger all landing in the top tier. If changes to rules and improved conditioning can extend those quarterbacks’ careers for years to come, future ballots could make another jump in quality as Mayfield, Darnold, Kyler Murray and others develop.2. A rollicking Rodgers debateFootball is such an emotional sport that overreacting to one play, one game or even one season becomes the norm. I liked how voters did not suddenly change their fundamental perspective on Rodgers simply because they did not like how he handled the situation in Green Bay last season, or because his stats have fallen off some. But the conversation around Rodgers was fantastic. Voters voiced a growing number of concerns that will bear watching in the future. I particularly appreciated the perspective a coach shared about Rodgers reaching a point in his career where he’s a legend and less accountable as a result.“It’s the small things,” a personnel director said. “You walk in the building and the equipment guy is kissing your ass, the mail guys are kissing your ass. It is a very interesting tightrope that players of that stature have to walk internally and still be able to hold themselves accountable when nobody else in the building is.”3. Respect for GoffThe Los Angeles Rams’ Jared Goff was not universally loved as a prospect coming out of college. His first NFL season was a disaster, and some wondered if he could recover. Now that Goff is succeeding, it’s easy to shift credit to coach Sean McVay, running back Todd Gurley and talented wide receivers.I felt as though voters got it right by placing Goff solidly in the second tier. He does have a hole or two in his game, as the second-tier criteria allow. There are questions about how well he would fare in a less favorable situation. But Goff has proven that when things are right around him, he can produce at an elite level. It’s good to see voters change their views in light of changing evidence. ~ max ~“The consciousness of good intentions disdains ambiguity.” - Alexander Hamilton, The Federalist Papers by /zn/ 5 years 11 months ago Total posts: 6943 Joined: Jun 28 2015 Maine Hall of Fame Sando comments on his QB tiers report POST #244 Do you have a link for that?
