I'm thinking the 49ers need to hold onto Garoppolo for one more season. They're supposed to have a roster that can compete for the NFC title. Going into the season with an unknown talent at quarterback is risky. Maybe Garoppolo has more limitations than the other quarterbacks on contenders, but he does know how to manage a game in that system. Lance may not be ready.

Quite a few think they will either trade him or cut him before any guaranteed money kicks in. Creating cap space to extend Deebo. And maybe Bosa too. If I'm a 49er fan I'd have some anxiety over the quarterback position. They have one guy who can win games but probably not do enough to get them all the way. And another guy who could be worse and cost them a shot at the playoffs altogether. If Deebo doesn't play there goes either quarterback's security blanket.

Would they really do Jimmy like that? He’s been to the nfcc and the SB and the Niners are going to just bench him, besides getting Jimmy off the books could help them keep Deebo.

According to the backup quarterback list Jack P Miller offered, it looks like Jimmy GQ is the number one backup in the NFL. That's a load of jack for a backup.

Down goes Jimmy.....

Kyle Shanahan makes it clear: Jimmy Garoppolo won't be on 49ers this year.

The 49ers are taking their sweet time to do it, but head coach Kyle Shanahan made it as clear as he possibly could:

Jimmy Garoppolo is going to get shipped out of town, one way or another.

Appearing on an episode of Tim Kawakami's podcast "The TK Show," which published late Monday night, Shanahan referred to Garoppolo's Niners tenure in the past tense and unambiguously called Trey Lance the starter.

All spring and summer, there have been persistent whispers that Shanahan and general manager John Lynch were considering hanging on to Garoppolo because their confidence in Lance was shaky. In so many words, Shanahan said that Garoppolo's contract — which guarantees him $24.2 million if he's on the Week 1 roster — makes that scenario impossible. (Several veterans need extensions or reworkings that would be a far better use of cap space than an expensive backup QB.)

"Had an awesome run with Jimmy, and it was great," Shanahan said on the podcast. "But when you bring in a salary cap, and things like that, there are so many tough decisions you have to make. We made that a year ago. And we got to here, and I was so happy with how Jimmy played last year, that he took us almost to the Super Bowl.

"But this is something that we did last year knowing where we wanted to go with this franchise, how you balance out a salary cap, how you balance out a roster. And Jimmy gave Trey a year that I thought he needed, just to get used to this league, get his feet wet a little bit. I think our team’s ready for Trey, going through OTAs. … Can’t wait to get started with him."
