ain't that the livin' truth....

bradord + shurmur /
rams, eagles (among the top 35 qbs):

overall:

26th, 25th - qb rating
34th, 25th - yards per pass attempt
30th, 26th - td %
34th, 31st - depth of completed pass
31st, 23rd - offensive yards per play
24th, 18th - offensive points per game

3rd down passing:

20th, 25th - qb rating
31st, 34th - yards per pass attempt
28th, 30th - completion %
25th, 32nd - % of 3rd down passes completed for a 1st

playing in the incredibly soft nfc east and against a very soft schedule, with offensive genius/guru chip kelly calling the shots, team shurmur/bradford could do no better than an 18th ranking in offensive scoring... throw out the 3 games they played against the league's two worst defenses, nyg (2) and saints, two teams that finished 31st and 32nd in offensive points allowed, and team shurmur/bradford would have ranked 26th in offensive scoring...

and if that's not sobering enough, look how team shurmur/braford fared against the four good defenses they faced, the jets, panthers, patriots, and cards... for the four games the duo averaged 16 offensive points per, 313 yards, while bradford completed just 59% of his passes for a 5.8 yards per attempt average, including just 5 tds against 3 picks for a 78.3 qb rating... for those counting at home those numbers equate to the following rankings, respectively: 31st, 30th, 30th, 34th and 32nd...

that said, shurmur is a perfect fit for fish, he's a yes man, a guy who will run whatever fish wants, a guy who ran whatever chip wanted, and a guy who ran whatever holmgren wanted, and that's horrible news for rams fans imo... re sam, the notion of asking, or expecting, him to convert a bad offense into a respectable offense is nothing short of laughable imo, especially if that offense plays in a tough division and/or faces a tough schedule... sam's best chance at success is getting a shot to take over an established, successful offense, an offense that had a great deal of success prior to his arrival, i.e. an heir apparent sitch, maybe then we can finally see if his "top tier potential" can be realized...

Funny thing, is back in the day I was a defender of Shurmer. I still have scars from the beatings Motes/Gareth put on me and Pesci from those days...
I'm a little ambivalent about this, I think it could be an improvement over what we have, but then again it just about cant be worse. And I hope the aspirations are higher than that.

What I would say if Shurmer made a return, I would think he'd know its his last shot at coaching relevance and may look to impart a blend of the WCO dump off offense he learned from Andy Reid to the spread mentality, fast pace offense from Kelly.

Alas, without a QB, its pretty much moot

I think they are talking to him about being our Passing Coordinator, not our OC. However, not sure how that will work.

I appreciate your detailed response but you lost me when you chose to remove games against certain opponents. I also think you gloss over circumstances.

For example, looking at Bradford's numbers when he was a rookie. On their own, they may not compare too well to the rest of the league at the time. But realistically, we're talking about what was a pretty terrible team. And with the Eagles last year, do you really think it's a fair assertion to claim that Bradford was in Chip Kelly's QB offense? Did you watch the Eagles at all? They were NOT the same offense that took the league by storm a couple of years ago.

Shurmur and Bradford garnered a OROY and last year, career highs for Bradford in completion % and ypa. Whatever Bradford is, Shurmur seems to get the most out of him.

Having said all of that, I don't think Bradford would come back to the Rams and I don't think the Rams would spend what it will take to get him. If Shurmur indeed comes onboard, it will be to resurrect Nick Foles. So, while I realize the reality of the situation I'd appreciate if you'd not rain on my parade until Bradford officially signs elsewhere! ;)

Bradford would be an idiot to turn down an offer to come to LA. What an incredible venue to ressurect ones career. If he'd sign a 1-yr deal in LA and perform well, on the national stage that he'll be given, then he can almost put whatever figure he wants into his next long term contract.

You know, this idea of Shurmur and Bradford returning is starting to grow on me.

Sorry, I meant why he wouldn't return as a two part thing, not just Bradford refusing. It seems to me that Bradford wants some continuity in his career for once so that makes me think the Rams are a slight possibility. But, I don't think the Rams are going to pay Foles AND spend what it would take to get Bradford in this year's QB market.

When i heard Shurmur was being considered I hadn't considered that he worked with Foles for two years in Philly and that's the connection the Rams are tapping IMO.

Jason La Canfora ✔ @JasonLaCanfora
Eagles have hired Frank Reich as their OC. Done deal...

Shurmur officially needs a job. Why wouldn't he reunite with Kelly in SF, I wonder?
