Mayfield has the best running game in football, an OL that puts our line to shame, and plenty of weapons, and yet his numbers are not all that great. Last year, when he didn't have that type of supporting cast, he sucked.

Funny that you would defend him after he lost to the Jets in a game in which he had two key fumbles. Double standard?

Why bring up perspective and then ignore that his entire WR corps was on Covid protocol? And I didn't defend his fumbles, just saying overall, he's having a good year this year. 25TD/8INT 95.8 rating and probably a playoff bid. For a guy that people were writing off, he responded pretty well.

So maybe you shouldn't write Goff off and, if we improve the OL, he'll respond well too.

I haven't written off the possibility. I've actually been pointing to Trubisky as an example in that regard. If there was ever a young QB that looked finished, it was him IMO. But, some time off, some threat to his job, an encounter with the ghost of Papa Bear Halas...whatever it was, he has come out the other side a better QB.

I have been waiting for that to happen with Goff. I have offered my pet theory about him not actually being out of his 3 year learning curve yet. I don't discount the possibility of him finding his way through all of this but as time goes by, it becomes harder to believe. Goff is at rock bottom and injured for the first time. We will all see how he responds.

A Youtuber that analyzes QB's questioned Goff's desire to get better as a big question with him. I'd never really considred Goff's work ethic and desire but he gave the example of how Goff commented on Alex Smith's return for Washington. Instead of admiring his tenacity and complimenting his hard work in returning, Goff wondered why Smith, with all of his money, was bohering? Didn't say it actually meant anything about Goff but it did raise questions for him. Which made me think about Goff's priority at the bye was to get away from it all.

Goff's head is not right at the moment and it will tell a lot how he responds to this adversity and injury.

To be fair, Smith almost lost a leg, and could have even died, so I don't take much from that comment.

No way to know for sure but it does paint a picture. Smith had a burning desire to get back on the field. Goff didn't understand it.

Let's see how this plays out in the long run.

long run is a bitch, always has been, always will be.... some were slobbering over mayfield just last week, haven't heard much from them since his 2 lost fumbles against the jets yesterday, that easily cost the browns the game and possibly a postseason spot, weird.

Sigh.

You're really going to double down on this one?

Goff just stayed in a game after popping in his dislocated (and likely broken) thumb.

Saying he doesn't understand why a guy, who has more money than anyone could ever need, and who almost died, leaving his wife and kids behind without a husband/father, would return to the game is hardly an indictment on his toughness or desire.

And Goff has done nothing but improve since he got paid? This gets better and better.

The Youtuber's question was about Goff's desire to continually get better. Whether or not he was motivated to get to that next level or if he'd become "comfortable"? Whether one agrees with it or not, I think it's a fair question considering the decline Goff has experienced after signing his big contract.
