It's situational.

Belichick has won every year and this will be his first without Brady since 2000. If he wins again, he gets huge votes.

#2 through #7 are mixed between teams that are expected to win (Dallas, Buffalo, Tampa), coaches who are expected to win (McCarthy, Arians), young coaches (Kingsbury, Stefanski) who if they win will get huge votes and Frank Reich (dark horse).

#8 through #12 are either teams and coaches who've won every year and the current hot team/coach (Shanahan).

Flores/Fangio are Kingsbury/Stefanski in a lower tier.

The 2600 group are a pretty good team/coach combination who if they won, it wouldn't be a surprise so they'd have to win big to win COTY.

Nagy, O'Brien and Marrone are low on this list and probably top 3 coaches on the hot seat going into 2020. I'm thinking Jason LaConfora's next article will be on that subject and he'll have McVay higher than those 3.

Screw coach of the year. As long as the Rams are team of the year, McVay and fans will be happy.

I think we over-value the guys we lost.

Some of the guys we lost are a better fit for a 4-3 ... so though I "value" the guys we lost, I don't think they were as valuable to our scheme. The LB's in a 3-4 need to be fundamentally sound, not superstars.

In addition to your comment, I think we under-value and under-appreciate the silent roll that A'Shawn Robinson will play ... A'Shawn will eat up two linemen in the Run-game .. and collapse the pocket on passing downs ... Donald and Ramsey will lineup on opposite sides of the field ... thus the opposing Qb will be forced to escape and throw to Ramsey's side of the field (assuming the QB can outrun Donald which won't happen very often). Smart LB's won't be fooled on screens tossed just over Donald's head.

Mark my words ... the 2020 Rams defensive results will be compared to the 1985 Bears defensive results, though using completely different schemes.

The "Fridge" Perry played at the same weight that A'Shawn Robinson is now ... Can McVay dial up a few plays with 7-o-linemen? ... some running plays for A'Shawn and pass plays for sure ... who knows maybe A'Shawn will throw a pass or two himself.

Gonna be a fun season .... I sure hope there will be one.

Loved your entire post but this is the only thing that worries me about the 2020 Rams season. I really, really hope it's safe for them to play it because McVay may just impress people all over again (with his staff decisions). Snead will get huge kudos for getting the guys McVay desires. Akers, Jefferson, Lewis and Burgess are 4 talented fits for this squad. And we didn't have a first round pick....again. Plus, just for shits and giggles we got a stud TE too!! At some point, you gotta believe, this crew is smart, talented and driven. Man, it's been a loooooong time but we will eventually realize, no worries. The Rams (and we) are in good hands.

So the two current favorites for Coach Of The Year are playing each other this week (McDermott and Flores) when the Dolphins visit the Bills. Both coaches are now at around even money to win, both will end up at 3-5 wins above expected — typical for the winners — and both would’ve paid at least 20-to-1 if you bet them before the season.

The game itself is also a pick-em oddswise.

So I wonder if places might let you parlay the current coach of the year odds with his team’s side to win the game; make bets on both sides and get a sure 30% payback? For the record Buffalo beat Miami in Miami early in the season and Flores would be at 5 expected wins plus make the playoffs if he wins in Buffalo this week so I think the bet is good here.
