Lamarcus Joyner wrote:I love the nickel back position. It’s a natural, instinctual position for me,” Joyner said. “I get to do a lot of things. I’m great at tackling. I’m great at beating guys to the point. I’m great at covering. There’s a lot the nickel has tied up into its identity as a role that fits me, so I’m very excited.”

At this point, there is no telling how his roll will be defined. Injuries, trades, and upcoming draft will all come into play.

You know, we've been down on Joyner for his 2018 play. But up until that season he was a pretty good player. I don't know what happened but its not beyond reason to think he can't return to being a good player. He's entering his prime years.

I agree, he was a good player before last year. But he was a good player when he mixed it up underneath as a nickel safety. IMO in 2018 he just wasn't suited for Wade's deep middle safety role. Weddle on the other hand clearly is, and in fact he played in Wade's system in SD for several years.

Well one thing is clear in all this. Last year people were saying the safety market crashed and some writers even theorized that it was the nature of the game that did that--teams were just not going to pay safeties anymore. Turns out that was just a one year hiccup and safeties are back to getting paid in the normal money range for the position.
