Frankly, when it comes to the draft, you take the edge rusher over EVERY position other than QB and LT. Unless the edge rusher is marginal by comparison to positional standards and another position offers elite talent. Edge rushers are expensive after their rookie deals, much like QBs and LTs. So, I agree with your position. Draft the rusher, sign the F/A safety. Draft the corner, sign the F/A ILB. Draft the LT, sign the F/A OG. Especially when the market is flooded and soft at a position your team needs; IE Safety.

Every team with half a clue has analytics for this; and experience, and common sense.

WHAT ABOUT WEDDLE?

Cameron DaSilva, editor at USA Today’s Rams Wire, believes the Los Angeles could be an ideal landing spot recently-released Ravens safety Eric Weddle.

DaSilva says adding a veteran presence like Weddle heading into ‘19 might work out well for defensive coordinator Wade Phillips’ group, especially considering the personnel that could depart in free agency, namely safety Lamarcus Joyner, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, and outside linebacker Dante Fowler.

“Weddle would provide position flexibility between himself and Johnson, as well, making it difficult for teams to diagnose the Rams defense because both players can play either safety spot. This is a signing that’s certainly worth exploring for both parties, especially since it won’t affect the Rams’ compensatory pick formula, which they always take into account.”

With the Safety FA market... just no reason to draft one high.
Oh.. and you're not getting very much for Joyner signing with someone else.. multiple better options. I expect him to sign a one-year deal, coming off such a mediocre campaign. Who knows.. maybe he comes back to Rams cheap.

Thing is I don't want Joyner back cheap or not. It's not that he had a mediocre year of the type he can bounce back from. I think he had a mediocre year because he's not suited to play the deep middle role Wade wants from his FS. He was better in previous years when he played underneath as a nickel safety. So I don't think he's a fit.

I agree. Between the class of FAs and draft prospects, there are better fits who likely will cost less.

I think that depends on whether Wade would wish to move Johnson to FS, as Stewart is a SS.
