On plays that send recievers deep the 1st action reads are to see if those deep routes are going to open up. If not you look shorter, then to dump offs or pull it down and run. The quicker you read and the longer you have to do so, the better the chance for a successful play.

If Goff is slow to process, short of Evelyn Wood, that is likely unfixable. If the plan was to disguise that, we should expect no better.
This is why the discussion of the Oline is in the mix. Bolstering it might be the only thing the team can do to improve / compensate for the QBs situation.

Welcome to short attention span theatre.

Well, first off, I don't think anyone knows how much more growth Goff has left. Typically, drop back QBs step it up after they turn 27. But some don't, like Jay Cutler. They just flat line.

This is what McVay is assessing right now. Is Goff more like Rivers or more like Cutler.

And those comps to QBs that started playing over 20 years ago are specious. The average Passer ratings have increased significantly since Brady was 26 years old. We've all seen the data.

I don't buy the idea that Goff is "slow." No one said he was "slow" in 2017/2018.

And to be honest OL keeps coming up because it is always a primary factor yet gets neglected by some.

Also, didn’t say it was a mistake per se. I didn’t like yet another example of lack of aggressiveness on a potential game tying, explosive play.

To which the continuing response is--smart qb play behind an OL that can't control pressure as well as it needs to only LOOKS "non aggressive" if you don't account for the context.

Fair enough. I am looking at THIS play. The context is all there. I will try to post the all-22. Then we all can see and discuss.

QBs are taught play one play at a time then move to the next. Now is he subconsciously worried about protection? Beats me. But, the design of each call has a Max payoff if you get the look/coverage you are hoping to get. And then there are secondary, tertiary options.

All 22 for one game won't necessarily do it. The Rams OL was not strong in controlling pressure. I put the numbers up in this thread (I think it was this thread.) A smart qb acts accordingly. If you cannot trust your OL you compensate for it. It does not matter if there is a lot of pressure on this or that given play. If across several games your OL already has shown it is not consistently controlling pressure the qb has to account for it every play regardless.

Anyway that's how I see it.

Not sure he is slow either. And the line was younger and better manned in 17 & 18.
Defences are stressing Goffs weaknesses now as well. So my only affordable suggestion for a solution is (1a) create the best OLine possible. (1b) a scorcher WR who stresses secondaries.

I'm jealous. Brady drops back a few times today on his first drive. No one touches him. Pretty easy touchdown drive. When Goff drops back he's got about two seconds to make 3 reads. If he's lucky.

I feel sorry for those who are going to spend the next few months waiting for the Rams to replace Goff. Not saying it’s impossible...but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

I don’t see it either. What I am waiting to see is the plan for overall offensive improvement and not losing too much on the D side.
