BTW, I never said it would be a tough call for the egg-spurts on this forum. lol. This from McVay:

We don’t want to have that go on again,” said head coach Sean McVay via ESPN. “I don’t think that’s good for anybody. I think sooner than later, being able to get that clarity. Understanding clear, open and honest communication.

WELL IT SURE AS SHIT LOOKS LIKE IT’S GOING ON AGAIN. Now Cleveland, Pitt, NYG, and Raiders are talking to Stafford. They say he wants a multi-year $50 mil per yr contract. I thought the Rams were balking at 60-70 mil. If they wanted him (and if this chatter is true) they would just pony up a 2 yr $50 mil contract. I would say it’s looking like 20/80% chance he’s a Ram this year. Letting Stafford set the market? Sure, none of these teams will outbid $50 mil/ per yr….right. McVay also said it’s nothing personal on either side. It’s all about the money….

McVay said "sooner rather than later" in reference to it not getting done until late July last year.

It's currently February.

Reports are Rams expect to have this resolved in a couple more weeks (beginning of league year) which would easily qualify as sooner than later, don't you think?

With due respect, and I mean that, I don’t see it that way. An old adage in my business is “time kills all deals”. The more it gets delayed the less warm & fuzzy and making it pure biz gets a lot easier. Will Giants give them the #3 pick? Nope. Will the Jets give the Rams ARod and Adams for Matt & Cooper along with team friendly contracts. Nope. Would the Steelers EVER pony up value in a trade? The Browns are the only realistic trade partner other than the Raiders and no team is going to go through all the hoops just to help Matt get a raise. We’ll likely eat it on both Cap situs and go with Garoppolo and a 3-4th round Rookie QB.

I thought I remembered rams saving a bunch after june 1st so I googled it..

If the Los Angeles Rams release Matthew Stafford after June 1, 2025, they would save about $27 million in cap space. This is because they would split his $45.3 million cap charge over two years.
Explanation

The Rams would still have to pay Stafford's $49.6 million cap charge until June 1.

If Stafford were released, he would receive $27 million in compensation for 2025.
The Rams would have to deal with dead money if Stafford retired, but they could split that across 2025 and 2026.

So I don't see the big hurry.

I see 2yrs 100 mil .....50 mil guaranteed , 2nd year option for both, unless some fool gm offers big-time trade value. (Jets, raiders, giants etc)

just my opinion

He’s said he talks to his family after each season I believe - as do most players with a family that have 10+ years in the league. This year, after the loss to the Eagles, he specifically said he feels like he has more good football left in him.

Quite right.

This nonsense that he has talked about retirement a lot has to come from a family member or it's utter bullshit. Any Stafford family members in this discussion?

Like Elvis said, "McVay said sooner than later when it comes to resolving the 'Stafford issue' and early March is a helluva lot sooner than June". But there are gonna be pot stirrers getting their rocks off.

It is a hurry as the Rams have to pony up 5 million mid March at the beginning of the new year. Also this is huge domino for Rams in free agency and DRAFT.

A few weeks ago I felt like the odds were 80/20 in favor of working out a deal to keep Stafford. But the more I read and hear about it, its looking more and more like its just about the money as far as he's concerned. I still think they can work it out. But I feel like the odds are more like 55/45. Maybe even 51/49. The only reason I think the odds are he stays is because I doubt anyone will give the Rams their asking price in return.

It would be a shame to see him chase the money and go to the Giants or Raiders. Those teams are not sniffing contender status for at least a couple more years. Could hurt his Hall of Fame status. He'll probably get it but might take longer if he goes to a perennial loser. A lot longer.

I'm still firmly in the "Rams will keep Stafford" camp.

The only way I see Stafford leaving is if the suitors engage in a bidding war that drives the trade price up so high that the Rams feel like they can't turn it down.

That said, I'll still put it as 90/10 that Stafford returns.

At the end of the combine Ian Rappaport hinted at maybe having Stafford update news as early as tomorrow, but expect resolution by end of combine.

Rapoport: 'Matthew Stafford staying with Rams 'feels more likely'. Let's hope he knows what he's talking about. Rapoport feels a decision could be made today....but a trade is still possible. I can't see the Rams being too upset about Brady recruiting Stafford at a ski resort. I'm sure the Rams would just as much love to get a boatload from the Raiders and package Kupp as well. I hope we have good news on Stafford staying today.
