Uhh, I pretty much guarantee Al Davis didn't call down to the sidelines and tell Gruden to keep it close. C'mon Bob. Oakland's defense sucks. They can't keep teams from scoring. That is the only reason this keeps happening. Probably shoulda kept Mack, no?

I'm pretty sure that Gruden would have ignored sideline calls from Al Davis, and by then I think they had already switched to headseats

yep they have their bad moments

And kept an excellent punter, and gotten a good kicker, and kept a great long snapper.

I had a girlfriend in 7th grade. She was gorgeous and fun. Everyone loved her and all the guys were envious of me. It was magical. We were the couple of the class and she was so perfect. She moved away that summer. I was heart broken. Then in my Senior year, five years later, I found out that she was returning. I was so excited for school to start. I wanted to rekindle the magic and return to my seat of prominence with my queen. I couldn't wait to talk to her. What a shocker. She looked nothing like the sweet hotness that I remembered from years ago. She was introverted and not so friendly too. I went and looked at my old 7th grade year book and thought, yeah maybe she wasn't so great, after all. Being caught up in the romance and excitement of the time, and then having it ripped away, led to me building up this crazy memory of how amazing she was. No girl could have lived up to my expectations. And you can't recapture magical moments.

In the Davis regime, Jon Gruden (or Guden if you prefer) is my old girlfriend, who coincidentally was named Johnna. They built him up to be the be all, end all. He's just a coach that wasn't actually as good as people thought. He should have stayed in the booth and gone down as a legend.

That was a lot of money to turn down. And then there's that ego thing. You can't talk about something (like NFL football) for years without finally saying, "screw it, I'll get back in there and show them"......even if he can't.

Great analogy Elmgrovegnome!!

I guess so, for most. I am into simple living. I wouldn't see it that way. How much money does one man need? He went back for that money but it is also a very tough job that requires long days. It's a crazy pressure cooker if you don't succeed. He had it nice and easy with the broadcasting gig. Low stress, lots of money, and a nice home life. I'm also a bit of a daoist. "The master does his work and moves on". So been there done that is kind of my thinking.

I can relate to your thinking.

Nevertheless, I think Gruden is enslaved by some type of OCD/Addiction to his job.

He is not normal.

4 games into his new coaching job. I think I would wait till I call it a failure. Right now it is. But I think the Mack trade told us they decided they wanted a rebuild for Vegas. Now they have some assets with the extra picks. Its up to them to do something with it. All those picks guarantee nothing. Fisher had a boatload.
