Neither project for NFL team in LA has enough league votes to make move

JASON LA CANFORA
CBS Sports NFL Insider

September 27, 2015 8:00 am ET

Franchise relocation to Los Angeles is a burning issue in the NFL and as owners prepare to meet in New York in a little more than a week, little movement is anticipated on that front. Neither the Inglewood project, spearheaded by Rams owner Stan Kroenke, nor the Carson project, led by Chargers owner Dean Spanos and Raiders owner Mark Davis, has sufficient support to carry a vote.

At least 24 of the league's 32 teams must vote in favor of a franchise in order for the transaction to be authorized. While time is becoming a crucial element -- this is going to have to be finalized by December, many owners believe -- there are still more questions than answers about which teams will be playing in Los Angeles in 2016, and where precisely they will be located.

Several ownership groups maintain that if the relocation came to a vote right now, there would be a sufficient split to hold up any move forward. The NFL will not bring the matter to a formal vote among the owners until enough straw polling has been conducted to ensure one of these projects has at least 24 votes in the affirmative.

Spanos is the more popular of the two owners among the general constituents, but Kroenke's project is viewed by some as potentially the more lucrative for all the entire league -- Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Patriots owner Bob Kraft chief among them. Some estimate Kroenke would have as many as 10 votes in his favor right now.

Obviously, the league -- and commissioner Roger Goodell in particular -- is going to have to massage this process and build a consensus for one project or the other. So far the NFL has not taken an official stance supporting one group. While that decision is highly unlikely to come at the October meeting, it is expected by a special session in December or at the latest, early January.

The Los Angeles relocation is one of several topics on the agenda at the Oct. 7, one-day league meeting being held in New York.

Rams the Legends live on wrote:If Stan does not get the votes and Carson is not a go then he moves absent the votes as in my opinion the only thing that will keep him in StL is if Carson is approved as no way he moves to a market that will be diluted. If no one gets the nod he is gone and saves himself a relocation fee.

this.

Agree.

I keep thinking of something I read somwhere around here, that Stan just starts in December. If nothing is decided by then, and later they want to decide and he is already in process.....then, ? They won't vote him down.

Lets not kill the messenger on Florio. 1st time hearong that Kroenke is pulling for a delay but it makes sense cause once Nixon is gone does a plan exist?

Stalemate works in Kroenke's favor cause he can just start building and dare the NFL to challenge him. Can you say antitrust lawsuit children? Sure I knew that you could

Goodell is the mouthpiece/puppet of the owners. If Stan builds it, the Rams will come

Stan's already delayed a year, I don't think he wants to wait another. Plus, I thought the Coliseum and Rose Bowl were being asked about temporary housing for an NFL team?

Sure, there's whatever's being floated to the media but what's actually being done says a lot more than the he said/she said through the media insiders.

I just remember that after each owners meeting the initial reports by everyone was the league was blown away by Inglewood. I have heard the Bradshaw's in the media all leaning toward Inglewood. Common sense and the quality of the project lean towards Inglewood. And so does the money.

Only thing that might not is the irrepressible Deano and more so the potential of greater revenue to the league playing 16 home game instead of 8,,, although the La Canfora article suggests otherwise.

To us this is a no brainer, but, there are considerations about StL and Carson which are undeniable and are being discussed. Some of the committee are discussing those considerations in the media? Maybe, but if so, I'm surprised they did.

Also what are some owners "ACTIVELY" doing? Discussing it 'actively'? There is no real mention of any action. Just that the vote may not get a majority. A bit of an overkill 'click bait' title. To be continued........

The leading article in this thread totally ignores the main factor, money. Stan has the money to do what he wants, without any help from the other owners. Davis and Spanos do not. Its pretty simple. The owners will do what they have done their entire lives, follow the money.

Doesn't the money give ESK the freedom to do whatever he wants, with or without the other owners' blessing?
