Not trying to offend and this is going to be like posting on the PD about the Rams going to LA.

He's a position coach only. His people skills killed his ability to do anything else without a strong HC. Kurt Warner wouldn't have had to leave if it wasn't for the *******, his overbearing personality killed the GSOT and his ability to get any job in the NFL.

I agree with this. Great OC though.

Your opinion is always welcome.

I agree that Martz must have some pretty serious problems when it comes to personal skills, that he was probably a nightmare to deal with. It's pretty hard to explain his career any other way.

But there was so much good in his results, as OC and as HC, that until somebody can come along and get the Rams, even just over .500, or in the endzone once in a while, personally, i'll be kind of pining for the guy, warts and all...

I'd give Martz the head coaching job without hesitation. No coach is perfect so with Martz, at least with his imperfection the on the field result was entertaining.

Martz's biggest failure was taking on too much, too soon. History has shown us that his tenure with the Rams was a mess all over the place, not just with him. So, while he may not have had the greatest drafts, management and the front office were literally working against him too.

I agree with Elvis and Mokler on this.

No doubt Martz had issues. But the Rams were a disaster for a decade prior to his arrival and have been abysmal every since he left. Yet, when Mad Mike was around we had regular playoff appearances, a Superbowl victory, and some of the most entertaining football I've ever seen.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - any true Ram fan that doesn't appreciate what Mike Martz did for this franchise is out of his mind.

I totally and categorically disagree with this entire line of thought. It was perpetrated by the media and by a highly dysfunctional and malevolent front office (there's a great article written by a former player that I posted at ROD that dispells this myth - I'll have to find and post here).

I'll take my cues from Holt, Faulk, Bruce, Pace, etc. I've never heard a bad word ever uttered by these pro's in regard to MM - as a HC or otherwise.

In fact, more often than not you hear of Martz as a really good friend as well as great coach when his players talk about him.

Looking forward to that article.

I do remember JT writing (when asked if Fisher might hire Martz as OC) that Martz had a bad rap with Kroenke for (something like) going around Shaw and Zygmut and straight to Georgia over something. I take it he lost and came out looking pretty bad.

Like i said, i think it's too bad. The NFL would be better with Mike Martz in it...

No one from his Bears teams or Kurt Warner would call him a friend. They all liked the system but that's it.

Here's John Kitna:

http://www.scout.com/nfl/49ers/story/79 ... o-sullivan

Q: Can you give us a sense of what it was like to play under Mike Martz for the last couple of years there? Can you describe your relationship with him and how it was to play for him?

Kitna: I think, first of all, speaking [of] the relationship side of things, I think Coach Martz was as close to a father figure as I've had in this game. Now, I grew up with my father so I don't need another dad, it's not something I'm seeking. He always treated me like a man from the first day that I met him on my free-agent visit here, to the last game we played together against Green Bay last year. He treated me like a man, he always told me the truth, he always told me what he didn't like what I was doing, he always told when he felt that I was doing the right thing or when things just weren't working out. He was always kind of a father figure that way and in terms of working for him, I feel like I've played for some pretty good coaches: Mike Holmgren, Bob Gradkowski, I've had some good quarterback coaches in this league but I learned more football in those two years with Mike [Martz] and it's probably a set of circumstances really more than anything. But he's so brilliant in terms of how to understand the quarterback position and how to attack defenses. So, in terms of that, that's still something that I work with right now, the disciplines that he taught in the two years that I was with him.
