From Jourdan:

Potentially motivating the Rams’ willingness to trade Jones is the emergence during training camp of undrafted free agent Omar Speights, who Snead said Saturday will make the team and even be on the game day roster. If the Rams have indeed decided they are not going to pay Jones, then trying to get Speights on the field quickly might be a priority.

This situation remains fluid, however, with more updates to come.

I've said in other posts that I didn't think the Rams would extend Jones. As stated by others, Jones is a good player but hardly great. He lacks the athleticism needed to give the DC flexibility in how he's used. He's an overachiever but there are limits to how he can be played. You want your MIKE to be an everydown player. Hummel, Spreights and perhaps Hampton give Shula a lot more flexibility in how he can use and align his LBs.

The Rams could even move Hoecht back inside to MIKE as he has the size, speed and the strength to fill those A gaps. The Rams have a lot of options at the position. I thought they would keep him for one more year for comp pick purposes but if he can work out a trade that gives them the pick a year early and possibly a higher pick as well.

I also think with the emergence of Tyler Davis that Bobby Brown is in a similar position. At most I can see them placing Brown on the PS as he has limited trade value.

I thought he’d be gone next year but now it’s likely we’ll be opening against the Lions minus, AD, EJ, our starting LT, backup QB and major ? marks at CB and Kicker. We have 2 weeks. Shoot, we’ll fix it. 🤩

Yep. I’ll be picking the Lions to win this game, sadly. We will see what more changes. If anything

You have waaaaay too many position changes for my tastes - none of which are simple at all. Rozeboom, Hummel, Speights and probably Reeder if Jones is traded will man the ILB. Jourdan keenly pointed out that Shula, with the versatility at the position, runs his D through his safeties.

This could also be posturing and Jones could sign the extension the Rams had/have on the table. He has overvalued himself. IMO.

True it could be teams aren’t even willing to give us a 3rd Round pick for you, you think you are getting more than we are offering you next year?

Like I stated earlier, might be Rams gamesmanship. I’d rather have him AND Omar inside at the same time in base packages. But if Speights can handle the assignments, Shula can put the dot on Curl/Lake/JJ3 to call the D. Then put Boom or Hummel next to Speights in base.
