As it stand they can do this forever. In 2025 they can trade a 2026 pick or picks for a 2025 second rounder. On unto infinity. That is, they're only short a 2025 pick if and when they decide to just not trade for a new one.
This year, the thing that mattered to them was trading up while keeping the 2 3rd rounders. That's what they need now, they figure, in a year after they stripped down the defense. If they want to take advantage of having Stafford while they still have him, they need defensive picks they like in 2024. It doesn't matter that it cost a 2025 pick when they can replace 2025 picks with 2026 picks when the time comes, if they want (and then 2026 picks with 2027 picks and so on).
