Now this is the type of comment that I find amusing.

“The Rams have a good record with Day 3 picks at safety, including recent starters like Fuller and Scott. In fact the Rams have a "method" when it comes to picking safeties on Day 3 (ie. there are things they specifically look for) and not only has it worked so far, as it turns out the Day 3 guys have looked better than their Day 2 guys (Rapp and Burgess).”

No offense, zn, but the Rams just signed JJ who they drafted 6 years ago and have not been able to replace since…so they finally had to Re-sign him again because Fuller, Scott, Burgess nor Rapp ever measured up to JJ in a full time role. I would have liked to keep Scott, but their “method” has once again left a gaping hole at S. JJ was a bargain. It’s a win-win, one year fix. Now they have to bite the bullet at Edge, likely for 2 players not here now or 2023 will be a track meet by air and ground.

It may be reassuring that 7 of the 8 “stars” the Rams featured in their final promo before the Charger game did not even suit up. Only Michael Hoecht (the last one) actually played against the Chargers. I’m not sure Hoecht is in that category yet but JJ will likely be added to Stafford, Kupp, Jones, AD, Higbee, Akers, and Durant. I expect they’ll have to sign an Edge FA or trade for one if last night was any measure.

Which has nothing to do with what I said. In fact I am not certain you actually responded to what I actually said.

You're denying that Scott and Fuller has each played well while they had chances? And Lake is looking very promising. If Fuller and Lake get a lot of snaps this year then Johnson is a good supplement to them.

And btw when you tell someone their comment amuses you, you intend offense. 😎 Not that I care, just pointing out the obvious.

Didn't Johnson leave before we won the Super Bowl? When Fuller went down in week 16, they signed Weddle but Scott came on and played real well too. Is it just the Rams, or is safety like running backs now? Ironically, look who took Johnson's spot in Cleveland. Rodney McLeod.

Scott was great, so was Fuller till he got hurt but when was the last time the Rams paid a safety? They don't do it. I don't think Fuller has any chance of getting a 2nd contract from the Rams. They'll be on to their new crop of young safeties. That's how they do.

They signed JJ to a vet minimum 1 year deal, again that's how they do.

The idea that the Rams think they made a mistake not signing JJ to a big contract after his rookie deal was done is nonsense...

And right now (though it's premature in a lot of ways) Lake is getting good buzz. The Rams don't sign their safeties and at the same time seem to trust their formula for drafting them, which are probably related things. And out of this first pre-season game we get good buzz on Tanner Ingle, a UDFA.

Tanner Ingle was the Rams’ highest graded defender according to PFF.
Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
[Ingle is]One of my preseason sleepers! Really brought it every day of practice when he had the opportunities.

It just seems like a Rams thing, that every summer we hear good buzz on a "bargain acquisition" type (low-drafted or UDFA) safety. Like I said, they seem to have a formula both in drafting/signing them and coaching them. If Lake and Ingle live up to their buzz then it will be a succession of players going back to Fuller. Fuller, Scott, Lake, Ingle.

Though yeah it's too soon to say that as a completely established fact. And there were a couple of mediocre ones in there too (Rapp IMO, and Burgess). And another caveat--Ingle is smallish and might be better suited as a role player for coverage packages.

And I haven't mentioned Taylor who is a well-regarded pick in his own right.

Still. It's starting very much to look like they know what they're doing. These guys most probably are not (as the ESPN writer claims) "fliers." They're not superstars either but just a line of very solid acquisitions. It seems to be a cohesive, continuing thing.

We read a lot of silly ideas this time of year. Here's a question, how much money did JJ get from the Browns and how much did the Rams pay for their top 3 safeties in 2021 and 2022, while winnimg the Superbowl? Nevered replaced him? Didn't miss him would be the more accurate phrase. But I'm glad he's back for part of if not the entire year.

Personally safety is the last thing to worry about with this defense. Fuller seems healthy finally and Yeast/Lake seem capable at a min, plus now we have JJ2 and Ingle and others.

DL is where the problems are... and without pass rush the young secondary will be severely tested. I really hope someone can shine once AD is playing along side them. Hope to hear some reports of the practice scrimmages with the Faders and Broncos.
