rams74 wrote:I think play calling is a big part of that equation. I really don't like the way McVay calls plays in the red zone, and especially inside the 10. He's got to get more creative there, which in turn will put Goff in a better position to be successful on those plays. If not, I think we can expect more of the same.

Last 3 seasons, a McVay offense has not broken middle of the pack when it comes to RZ scoring. Since they have a high-scoring offense overall, this can be overlooked, though McV himself is on record as saying it's something he wants to fix. Which is good because improvement means addressing flaws and good teams want to keep improving.

Anyway I said last 3 years. In Team Red Zone Scoring Percentage (TD only), McV's offense was ranked 19th in 2018, 17th in 2017, and 30th in 2016.

The top 10 on that stat in 2018 includes 5 playoff teams. So arguably, it's not a deal-breaker, since half the teams in the top 10 were not in the playoffs. But the Rams are addressing it either way.

In terms of Goff himself, there;s a separate stat, though it's not really a pure RZ stat, it's inside the 10. The stat: % Touchdowns/Attempt, In 10 (here: http://stats.washingtonpost.com/fb/lead ... pe=Passing ). On that stat, Goff was ranked 22nd in 2018. (He was ranked higher in 2017.)

The top 10 in that stat includes just 3 playoff qbs. So like the other stat it too is not a deal-breaker...though again the Rams are addressing it anyway.

:D

and in 2018 dalton ranked 1st, fitz 2nd, winston 5th, while brady ranked worse than goff - clearly a stat you can sink your teeth into! but let's take a closer look at qb stats inside the 10... for the 2017-2018 stretch, among the 32 qbs who threw at least 20 passes inside the 10, goff ranks 7th in qb rating, ahead of brady, ryan, rivers, wilson, rodgers, roethlisberger, and prescott to name a few... he also ranks 7th in completion % ahead the same guys mentioned above... hopefully goff will get his shit together some day!

Yeah I know. I said this (to provide the whole quote):

We can all play games with the numbers. I look for numbers that correlate to what I see.

Let’s look at QB rating inside the 20...

Goff is middle of the pack at 14th.

The top 5 guys are:
Rank Name Team Stats
1 D. Brees NO 118.5
2 B. Mayfield Cle 115.7
3 K. Cousins Min 113.9
4 P. Mahomes KC 112.0
5 A. Luck Ind 111.9

Brady is 8th, btw.

Bottom line for me is that’s what I see when watching Goff in McVays red zone offense. A middle of the pack performance. So, I’m not surprised by 14th, it fits what I see on the field.

I get what your saying here but this is basically the definition of confirmation bias, always good to at least consider what doesn't jibe with what you already think...

proof that only two stats matter ... who won it all and who came in 2nd ... as far as I'm concerned the 30 teams that didn't make it to the SB were tied for last.

took the words out of my mouth... max is one of those personalities who likes to assume the worst, then goes about his business looking for anything that he thinks might support his pessimistic outlook, oh well.

in other news, here's a look at how goff's career redzone stats under mcvay compare to the career redzone stats of other notable qbs... looks like we have a real rz qb stiff on our hands, eh? or at best a "mediocre" rz qb, right? riddle: where do you think goff would rank among these guys in qb rating if you erased one of his two rz picks? :D

* redzone data is only available for the 2000 season forward, so p.manning's and kurt warner's stats don't include seasons prior to 2000.

I think it works best when both the numbers and what you see support each other.

You can have a confirmation bias anyway you do it. Just with numbers, just with the eyeball. Or with both. I don't know how many times I've read people who swore they saw something but...it's doubtful. Or people who post numbers to just back some thing that's clearly not real. That happens.

BUT. You can make a case for something being more real if the numbers and the eyeball test combined are convincing.

Why make it personal? That's the one approach that has no value.

Numbers are nice. But I prefer to keep it simple.

Goff has improved each year in the NFL. Just like in college. He's never not gotten better.
The past two seasons Goff is 24-7 in the regular season. 2-2 in the playoffs. The main reason they win is because they average over 31 points per game over those two seasons. Goff is a big reason for that.

Bottom line: Goff has been pretty good and figures to be even better. They usually win with him. Not sure how much more you can ask of him.
