You never know what the Bills will do. But the article I read on the other forum said its not likely they match the offer. They have their starter. They'd rather not pay that much for a backup.

Very interesting summations, guys! I think it's a poison pill, the roster bonus, but that's just a gut feeling. snack, I hope you're right; this guy is the missing piece of the offensive line puzzle, IMO.

This staff is already outdistancing the previous one ... a low hurdle, I realize, but an important one. ;)

Buffalo Bills center Ryan Groy receives offer sheet from Los Angeles Rams
69 comments
The Bills have five days to match, but receive nothing in return if they pass on Groy.
by Jeff Hunter@MrJeffHunter Mar 14, 2017, 8:28am EDT

As first reported by ESPN’s Mike Rodak, the Los Angeles Rams have extended an offer sheet to Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Ryan Groy.

Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (an authority on contract figures) is reporting that the two-year deal is worth $5 million, with a base salary of $1.5 million in each season.

According to Tom Pelissero of USA Today, the Rams are willing to pay $3.5M guaranteed, $2.5M of which comes from his $1.5M salary in 2017 and a $1M signing bonus. There’s also a 2018 signing bonus if Groy is on the roster in a week.

The Bills have five days to match the Rams’ offer. Since Groy was an undrafted free agent and the Bills tendered him at the lowest value, they will receive no compensation if they decide to pass.

The Rams have a gaping hole on the depth chart at center. Last year’s starter, Tim Barnes, was released with one year left on his deal earlier this month. The Rams’ new offensive line coach is Aaron Kromer, who coached Groy in Buffalo last year and is entirely aware of his abilities.

Groy, 26, proved in seven games last year that he’s more than capable of starting at center in the NFL. However, the Bills have a starting center entrenched on the line in Eric Wood. While Wood is entering a contract year, it’s hard to envision him playing anywhere else past next year, and at 30 he should still have a few good years left.

It’s hard to see the Bills matching this offer. While it’s fair market value for Groy (probably a bit on the lower side), he doesn’t really have a spot in Buffalo to earn that money unless someone ends up on injured reserve again. Given the needs that remain at other positions, notably wide receiver and defensive back, it’s hard to justify the team sinking starter money into a backup position.

Perception vs. reality

The first moves Fisher & Co made were signing Courtland Finnegan, Jo-Lonn Dunbar, William Hayes, Kendall Langford, Quinn Ojinaka, Robert Turner and Scott Wells.

They drafted Brockers, Quick (bad), Janoris Jenkins, Pead (bad), Trumaine Johnson, Givens (not good), Watkins (bad), Zuerlein, Brown and Darryl Richardson.

And they signed some unheralded free agents like Tim Barnes, Austin Davis, Cory Harkey, Johnny Hekker and Chase Reynolds.

I'm excited about the new staff. I'm glad they are addressing needs. But IIRC, we were equally excited about the guys brought in in year one of the previous regime.
I'm not going to get all excited and claim the 2017 group is head and shoulders above the 2012 group that became Rams. I am excited that this staff may actually do something good with them. But that's based on the failure of the previous regime and the newness of the current one.

Absolutely, positively agree with your reality assessment ...

But I'm choosing to stay overly eager about the perception for now. ;)

Great post and so true.
It felt great to be enthusiastic then as it does now.
Fisher couldn't push his crew over the top however due to his offensive liabilities. Seems we are on pace defensively

On a side note, Givens sure looked like a keeper after his rookie year

Hey, I'm as enthusiastic as the next guy.....you know how I roll. I'm just not going to look at new signings which happen with every new regime and believe the previous regime didn't have a clue. The previous regime had a philosophy that didn't work.

Yes I like the idea our defense is not going to miss a beat.....might even be better......with SonofaBum running things. And with McVay, the offensive philosophy should seem like night and day compared to Boras/Fisher. Which brings me to your point on Givens. He did look like a keeper; a legit deep threat his rookie year, but you have to thrown downfield to utilize a deep threat!!! :D

Back to the subject of the thread, 4 days to go before we know if Groy is a Ram. I'm hoping we get him.

I'm totally with you on this. I was pretty harsh on Fisher at the end, deservedly so IMO, but I wont erase all the good stuff with that. I was pretty psyched at their early moves too, heck we drafted Donald and Gurley in back to back years!
Fisher and Snead did a great job early on, just like this tenure appears to be doing as well.
I feel now though we have a bigger head start then back then. Sonfobum is better than our DC was (Walton?) and McVay brings a much brighter future to our offense.
So yeah man, I'm pumped as all get out too, but also give credit where credit was due....

Not to mention that the roster is in better shape overall, now, then when Fish took over. A lot of us gave him a little more cushion than we should have because he inherited such a disaster. There is at least some belief that the talent under Fisher was underutilized and that McVay, with a few key additions, can get us in the hunt in a hurry.

But, again, that could be my unwarranted optimism talking. ;)

IF this is truth, and I am one who believes, at least on offense, that he was sub-par. This should give us all hope for much better things on that side of the ball with many of the existing Rams roster. If the D and ST's remain at their same level, we could sniff the playoffs for the first time in forever.
