Just awesome to watch politics at work. The State Senator probably got wind of Moody's pending downgrade and looked for an escape goat to pin it on. I don't know anything about MO politics, but I gather the Senator & Governor don't like each other, or are perhaps from different political parties. Would I be right on that one? Hence, I betcha the downgrade was coming, and had nothing at all to do with the stadium issue. But hey, in politics, when an opportunity to blame the opponents arises, you don't pass it up

Nixon is a Democrat and the legislators are Republicans. I'm pretty confident if MO had a Republican Governor trying to save the Rams with some questionable bond manipulation, the Democrats would be all over him. Like you said, politics.

Legislatures Confident in Stopping State Bonds for NFL Stadium

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMOX) – Legislative critics of Jay Nixon’s NFL football stadium plans got a boost from one of Nixon’s top administrators. They were told the state could not be sued if legislature failed to fund the annual bond payments.

When Republican Senator Rob Schaaf asked what consequences there would be if the state did not make payments on bonds issued to fund a new stadium for the St. Louis Rams, Office of Administration Commissioner Doug Nelson said “I don’t know.”

Nelson said three different credit agencies examine a number of different categories to determine the state’s credit rating.

Republican Senator Rob Schaaf told a forum that he will do what he can to delay the Missouri Senate from voting whether they will issue state bonds to cover construction of a new stadium for the St. Louis Rams.

“If it should come to pass that the bonds are issued, that it is included in a budget that comes before the Senate, then, as I start my filibuster my first words are going to be, ‘bondholders, I know a good attorney.'” Schaaf says.

Schaaf and Republican Representative Jay Barnes said they are confident the legislature has the votes to stop the stadium bonds from being issued.

Missouri reps went on full blast this week.

I read somewhere in one of these articles that the Alderman are on vacation until after Labor Day weekend. If I remember correctly the the Alderman were pushing for a public vote. I would guess they would do the same thing and ask for a public vote. Unless Dave Peacock could convince them other wise.
