Jim Tomsula after the 49ers’ first training camp practice: On continued problems with the Levi’s field, the quick tempo, Bowman and more

highlights in the first practice of the 49ers’ 2015 training camp tonight at Levi’s Stadium, but the grass field was even more eye-catching.

For some reason, the 49ers decided to hold their first practice immediately after a high school all-star game on the field, and there were divots already coming up during the prep game.

Then when the 49ers started individual drills on the outside parts of the Levi’s field, huge clumps started coming up and a few players started slipping.

It got so bad even Jim Tomsula and Trent Baalke spent time grabbing divots and putting them back into the ground.

After the two-hour-plus practice, Tomsula said the middle of the field was fine for team drills, but that he’ll have to figure out a better way to do individual drills that use the edges of the turf.

Tomsula also said it’s possible the team might move tomorrow’s scheduled practice at Levi’s (the first eight practices of camp are scheduled for the stadium field) to the regular practice fields next door.

Memorably, last year Jim Harbaugh pulled the 49ers off the Levi’s field in the middle of their first and only training camp practice at Levi’s in 2014… and only went back later in the regular season after a new field had been put down.

The 49ers are now on their fifth grass field in just over a year at Levi’s.

* Generally on the first practice: “Good day, first day today–you saw it all there. Felt good about that. Obviously we’ve got things we’ve got to clean up. And go from there.”

* On whether he felt any extra significance on the first camp practice of his head-coaching tenure: “Didn’t think about it; I was trying to make sure we were all doing what we needed to do.”

* On the Levi’s grass field getting chewed up tonight and the possibility of moving to the regular practice fields: “We’re not going to put them at risk. Felt like today, just talking about the grass… probably need to re-think how we can do an individual period. Individual chewed it up pretty good with the wide receivers and the DBs along the edges.

“The middle of the field’s good. So the team period I wasn’t concerned about at all; that was why we cut a minute or two out of the individual…

“We’re not going to come out if it’s not safe. Our grass guys… they’re fantastic; they’re phenomenal. And they wouldn’t let us come out here if there was a problem.”

* Does he expect to stay on schedule at practice at Levi’s tomorrow? “I expect it but I will reserve our right to make decisions as we need to. But yeah I do expect to.

“Yeah, the high school game first, OK? Then coming back out here on the edges. So we’re going to roll it, they’re going to work it all night and we’ll know. But we’re not going to come out if it’s not good.” ...

Sounds like the drainage is messed up, the soils weren't compacted properly, turf is to fresh, over watered (drought anyone) or bad turf blend. Perhaps the grounds keepers are taking a page out of the Brady ball guys playbook and working on a compensatory advantage for the 9ers there at Levi.

The field didn't fare well for the high school All-Star game last night. They replaced the sod 4 or 5 times last year. Growing grass can't be that complicated (might have to ask some of the millions of potheads in this state for advice).

He's a good one to follow on Twitter. I know it was a long time ago but i didn't like him that much when he was the Rams beat reporter for the LA Times.
