I was looking at the ages of who they let walk or traded and initially thought they were purging age. But some of those guys are mid-20's. That sounds like a problem. A salary/talent purge and not an age purge.

I believe that the Whiners had to reset,
due to getting ready to pay Purdy's new contract.

They have some top-heavy contracts for now,
the likes of:
Warner, Kittle, Williams, Bosa,
Aiyuk, Matos, & McCaffrey

The key for them, is their upcoming draft,
They have 12 picks going into the draft.
With their first four picks are in the top 100.
I would say their first pick is going to be a future LT,
Williams is getting up there in age,
or should I say he is already up there.

I'm sure their first four picks, they will get some good players.
But are they as good as the RAMs picking up good players in the later rounds?
We will see.

But there will be a lot of rookies on the team,
making rookie mistakes.
So, I don't see them being anywhere close to the RAMs for the top of the Division! IMO

With Mcafrey and Kittle you should be able to get something. Their defense took a hit.
Now what they have going for them on their side is great coaching

shannahan Saleah on defense.

So in the NFL you can always lean on great coaching.

The thing with Purdy is when they needed him to be great and make plays on his own he couldnt do it. When they needed him to lead the team and be that franchise Quarterback he couldnt do it. Thats the concerning thing.

Trading Mason they must feel good about Mcafrey.

Winning is easier with that schedule and when you have a player like Nick Bosa on your defense you always have a shot. I do put him in that class of Max Crosby.

Theyre gonna need guys like Ricky Pearsal to make a huge step in their development.

Good coaching can definitely make a difference. But the old cliche, X's and O's vs Jim's and Joe's. The 49ers lost quite a few impact players on defense. Bosa's good but his numbers are down since he got paid. In 2022 he had 18.5 sacks in 16 games. The last two years he had 19.5 sacks in 31 games. At this point I'd say Crosby is much better.

Kittle's into his 30's but he hasn't showed signs of slowing down much. Still, you gotta wonder if the decline will be coming soon. McCaffrey's at the age where heavily used running backs start to decline. Their shelf life is much shorter than any other position. Not to mention injury history. Its possible his achilles problem is chronic.

Purdy cannot carry a team when things around him are not optimal. And he definitely is not a bad weather guy. But they still have to pay him. Otherwise they'll be in that dreaded quarterback purgatory. Thats why Dallas overpaid Prescott.

Even with a last place schedule I'm skeptical they can be a playoff team. I'll be surprised if McCaffrey plays more than 12 games. All the losses on defense I can't see them being anything other than a bottom 16 defense.

Are the niners actually doing it though? They signed some vets DROB and brought back the fullback etc etc. Isnt this mostly to fit the Purdy contract.

The niners still have the old LT Williams, an aging Kittle and McCaffrey...

The Rams had their load bearing walls.

But i'm not sure what the Niners are doing. Maybe they're making room for Purdy but maybe the owner is just sick of spending money? Kawakami sure has his doubts about the whole thing.

I wouldn't be that shocked if they bailed on Purdy and tried to make it work with Mac Jones.

And the way the Kyle J. thing went down, sure seems like there could be some dysfunction going on. If there is, does it come to a head?

Most likely it's business as usual but i am interested to see how this all plays out...

Half of the 49ers starters from their Super Bowl team two years ago are gone. They still have their pillars (CMC, Trent Williams, Kittle, Bosa, Warner), but there's a lot of age and injury history there.

And, of course, as many have pointed out... they're going to have to pay Purdy.

I'd be happy to see them fall into a multi-year drought.

A Raider fan friend explained to me why he hates the 49ers more than any other team. It sounds like the same reason I hate that team. Their fans. During the 80's they would walk around beating their chests as if they personally had a hand in their championships. It was a classic "My dog's better than your dog" mentality.

It went on for years. I got to the point where I watched their games just hoping to see them lose. To this day I still watch their games. I probably know more about that team than any 49er fan I know.
