In the NFL, teams can legally keep two sets of books. One set of books is based on the checking account. The 2nd set of books is based on the "Salary Cap".

(Leaving the LTBE/NLTBE incentive out of the equation)

$20 million is coming out of the Rams real-money checking account in 2025.
$14 million is coming out of the Rams "Salary Cap" for 2025.

The "2nd year" of the contract is a way to play games with the "Salary Cap".

With elite players there is a gentleman's handshake agreement to reevaluate the situation before the start of the 2026 season.

The cash "incentives" for 2025 if achieved, will be paid out of the Checking Account in the 2025 league year. Whether it counts against the 2025 or 2026 "Salary Cap" depends on what the actual incentive is.

When a team goes year to year on a player it's a clear sign they are in transition at the position. They didn't find what they wanted so they are back into the same scenario. Stop and look at the time line. Stafford waited until just before TC after the draft to insure the Rams didn't draft a QB to pull his hold out threat.

When the Rams originally drew up the contract by the structure of the contract they had a tentative plan to get their next franchise QB. It was either going to be by trade or draft. Their time table was thrown out the window with Matt's stunt. So now they are going year to year to decide whether to pull the trigger this year or next year on drafting a QB. They were intent on finalizing their defense so they used both first and second on the D front and it worked. Forbes falling into their lap was huge. It freed up this draft should the QB they like drop to them at 26. Forbes was the last major piece in this defense. They will need one more starter at CB but they can draft for that next year if they can extend Witherspoon. That said they could draft a CB in the third round and I think they might as the signing of Poon took away the immediate need for a run stopping NT. They could go RB and CB in the third round.

They must assume that their first round pick next year will be lower than this year. So if they are going to make a move on a QB in the draft it should be this year. Again I don't think it's a coincidence they have 3 coaches with experience in QB development hired this year.

If they were looking at an extended run at SBs beyond this season why just one year contracts for Stafford, Adams and Tutu? I look at 2026 as a contingency year for both players. If they get the QB they want, if he goes through OTAs and TC with no injuries and develops as planned then those contingency years might not be needed. Adams buys them a true hired gun for their SB run this year. I think they are hoping to strike gold with yet another day 3 WR like Puka and Whittington.

People don't want to look at the reality that Stafford's days as a Ram are numbered. That he is closer to the end of his career than the beginning. Look at Stafford weeks 15 thru 17 last year. Now look at him after a second bye in the wildcard game. You can't tell me that he was the same in weeks 15-17 against lesser competition. That is why Jimmy is back this year. The other reason is because if they can't get the QB they want in the draft, then Jim gives them a cheaper long term alternative at QB in 2026.

People think the Rams can't win with Jimmy G. but I disagree. He almost beat a highly motivated Seattle team playing with #2s. Had Sean played him with the 1's and rested only Stafford the Rams might have made it to the SB. But Sean didn't want to embarrass Matt by holding only him out and it cost the Rams forcing them to play Philly in a snow storm. The Eagles played the Commanders in the championship game in 41 degree weather. Seeding made all the difference and Sean now knows it.

The bottom line is that the Rams have set the 2025 season up as a focused SB run season, and they are treating it as such, but they don't seem to have changed their overall course of potentially starting a new QB and offense in 2026.

Also why is MS/QB chatter on a Davante Adam's thread? I know the answer, I'm asking rhetorically.

Yeah, I've been thinking that Adams will maybe wear #15.

Rodgers wore his college number with the Jets. Adams could do the same thing here.
