I know that Stafford said he will play in 2025, but I didn't see a source talking about extending his contract. Cooper Kupp also said that he will play in 2025 but we don't expect the Rams to extend him.

Do you have a source? (I'd like to catch up with current events)

Or can you educate me based on the obvious that I'm oblivious about?

Yes, every contract Stafford has ever had was "extended". But at some point he will be on the last year of his career and won't have any more extensions.

Since there is no commitment that Stafford will play beyond 2025, why would there be any extension at all?

There won't be. He has 2 years on his contract now; they'll adjust the money there. If they do add a 3rd year, it will be basically a void year for cap purposes.

By all accounts Stafford wants more of his money to be guaranteed. Also, going by this, he's ranked 15th in QB pay so he might want more money too. But more years? No.

Regardless of the length of the contract IMO it's going to be essentially a one year deal with any other years added to spread the cap hit and give them a fallback option. I expect them to draft a QB. I think they may target a QB that they have to move up to get in the first round (probably top 5). But any added years would be contingency years for injury or other issues with a new QB. I would be surprised if he signs for less than $40M for 2025.

I think people need to look at the long term. Look at all the big extensions that will need to be made starting after 2026. They want a QB on a rookie contract to be able to afford to keep this roster together for as long as possible. It's what the Niners tried to do with Purdy but messed it up. Because he was Mr. Irrelevant and didn't start day one of his rookie year as the starter. He only started 5 games that year. So the Niners have had only two full years to evaluate him in regards to extending him. This will be his contract year and he's expecting an extension now.

This is why taking a QB in the first round even if they have to use multiple first round picks to get the guy they want then they can afford to let him develop behind Stafford for a year. With the 5th year option, they will have a full four years of his play to judge his worth.

This is why I think the Niners will draft a QB in the first round this year. Their offense is similar to the Rams so the two teams might be looking at the same players as a future franchise QB. I expect the Niners to use Purdy as a bridge and try to tag Purdy and trade him after the season.

I expect the Rams to make a big deal about continuing beyond this coming season with Stafford, i.e. announcing a multi-year deal before the draft to keep the Niners from jumping them if in fact they are thinking of moving up in the first round. This is the beginning of Liar's Season. If a true franchise QB is what the Rams want then F'em picks and move up and get the guy they really would love to have and that is exactly what I expect them to do. This is why "extending" Stafford is a key cover for what they want to do. Sort of like the "accidental" encounter with Stafford in Cabo when they publicly said they were standing down for the weekend. A trade like that simply doesn't happen on short notice. The Lions, i.e. Holmes worked for years with Snead, and you don't think it was set up long before it actually happened?

Also, the Rams have a history of draft day trades with NE. If it's going to happen it's being worked on now which is why McVay was impatient about Matt's decision being "sooner rather than later". All the crumbs combined make a beautiful cake.
