I've looked at the other failed QBs with many IMO due to simply poor coaching or poor team around them. But do they project as a day-one starter in a new system in LA? I think every one of them would need a year of coaching and mentorship. None would be as ready to play and as good as Jimmy G that first year. Do you invest at least one first-round pick to find out? Only if they can't draft who they want. Meanwhile, they need to extend Jimmy or he's gone perhaps to Seattle which would be not a good thing.

The issue is how much do they want to pay a QB as a temp starter. The Vikings got lucky with Darnold then all the ghosts appeared when they needed him most. That is the warning and lesson of taking on someone else's project player. Failure at CB (Forbes) doesn't have the same impact as at QB1.

Forbes is a good example of what I'm talking about. They signed him knowing they were going to sit him for the rest of the year and coach him up and physically develop himself. Because of Witherspoon, they had the luxury of doing that.

The lesson they learned with Goff is that they played him because they didn't have an option not to. His struggles compounded. But look at how good he is now. I have no doubt that had the Lions not had all the injuries on defense this would have been their SB year.

With Jimmy you know he's well-liked in the locker room. He proved he has gas in his tank against a motivated Seattle team playing their starters as Jimmy played with mostly backups and rehabbing previously injured vets. You either extend him now or he will walk to a team that will provide him with a starting opportunity.

If you are going the failed vet route then you sign Darnold and play him as a backup with Jimmy starting. Coach him up for a year as a backup. Let him learn the offense and evaluate him. Darnold is no different mentally than all the other failed first-round QBs. But two things were pretty evident in the Rams game. The level of coaching he received looked to be minimal and their OC did him no favors in his play calls when the OL was struggling. Why? Because they never really embraced him as their future starter. IMO KOC blundered.

If they go the failed first-round QB round then Darnold must be on the table but will still need a year to learn the offense and be coached up without the starting pressure. He won 14 games and that is more than can be said for the other QBs.

I don't think the Rams are foolish enough to waste a year of these young defenders with a project QB. Just remember Jimmy was in NE so he knows how to play in snow.

They could extend Jimmy for 3 years. Draft a more developmental QB on the second day or whoever is the best available at their pick in the first round. They will have 3 years to develop him and have an affordable QB2 in the process. Why the first round? Because even if they stay with Jimmy for 3 years, they control the QB's rights for 2 more years.

Guys like Kyle McCord come to mind as a 3rd or 4th round pick. He's a pure pocket pass but like Stafford when he was young with only limited mobility. That said running is physical and can be improved with proper training and time. He's got an arm like Stafford when he was young. He's not a designed run threat but can move well enough to threaten in the short red zone and get those 3rd and 5 types of first downs which is all McVay needs. He looks like a potential young Stafford and should be on the board in the third round. He's good enough now to provide a good #2 for a couple of years while he develops with enough talent to potentially be a quality starter in a few years.

This would allow them to use their first-round pick on an OT.

If there is one thing the draft has shown when it comes to QB is that if you want him and he's on the board you get him (just like they did with Fiske). QBs go early as often as they drop. Before the draft last year, I had Daniels, Maye, Nix, and Penix as my top 4 QBs because all were capable of starting as rookies.

But then comes the combine and all the media hype. People laughed at me when I said Caleb needed to sit and develop for a year perhaps two. He's got talent but needs the right system and coaching staff.

Right now a lot of evaluators feel McCoy is slotted as a 4th round pick. I could see them taking an OT in the first, ILB, and QB in the 3rd not necessarily in that order. With Forbes, they have essentially their high CB pick and I think they view it that way. The Rams have options at ILB but they also need a run stuffing NT. I can see them taking that NT in the 4th. I can see them going TE, WR, and OT after that.

Yeah, this is going to be a very interesting offseason and draft.
